Sorry if I'm going nuts, but I've been attacked by thirty something badgers so far, most of whom are rotting carcasses right now... and I don't even have my butcher shop set up yet.

Because I am an asshole and want to offend the elves this time, I made an 11x11 (9x9 interior) room walled, floored, and ceilinged with wood.  The area is heavily forested-- believe me, I have more than enough to spare even after using something around ~300 units to make this bloody building.

It is my dining hall and meeting area.  It will have 12 tables when it's finished.

The most important worskhops are up (mechanics, smelter, furnace, carpenter, mason, kitchen, still, etc).  Seven rooms completed and smoothed, with bed and table.  Starting on engraving them, then I'll plonk down statues.

Technically, the elves won't even notice your wooden dining hall. They only pay attention to logs in your stockpiles. But it's a nice thought.

I have already prepared for that eventuality:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

For reasons which should be obvious given the project I have set up, the stockpile is somewhat empty.  But it's there.  They'll have to pass through it to get in my fortress.

Another season, another werewolf.  This one arrived with some migrants, apparently chasing them into my fort.  It killed one, a metalcrafter (a skill I never use anyway so he'd just have become an engraver/woodcutter/miner or something).

And then it was promptly killed by Zasit Keskalsazir (Zasit Shootbridges-- IE Urist McAwesomeName), bringing his total kills up to 28, including a kobold thief.  The other two kobolds ran off and fled off the map.

Okay, it's ten PM, gotta wake up in eight hours.

I think I made good progress.  My food production is stable and probably excessive for my current population, I have a 3x3 room for everyone that isn't a recent migrant, lots of workshops, and am working on a set of burial rooms (I decided they were burial chambers because I realized I dug myself into a corner and had 1 square wide hallways, which are too small for residential sectors but just fine for burial chambers).

Lots and lots of sand, so.... can someone give me a pointer on how to make a good start on a glass industry?

Make a Kiln, get melting sand into green glass. Ofc Magma-kilns wont use up your wood (but i gues thats not a problem :) ).
You need to create a sand-collection-zone and use the "collect sand" job on the kiln (or via manager) to collect sand into bags, this can then be used as 'ore' in the kiln to make glass items.
Remember that windows can be destroyed by building destroyers like doors etc.

But you can make glass-blocks and the nbuild walls floors ramps stairs etc out of them - which ofc then bcome invincible.

You can make pretty much anything in the game out of glass. Crafts, Coffins, Statues, Cages (terrainiums) Giant-Axe-Blades etc etc.

Ah.  Would a green glass serrated disk be good for traps then?

from what i understand, potentially. glass doesn't have its own definitions like the majority of other things do, so it seems to pick one at random and mimic that. so, you may get glass that acts as steel or glass that acts as wood. either way, it's something you'll never run out of

So, would that said glass serrated disk be worthwhile as a source of traps to save my metal production some grief and let me focus on weapons and armor for my dwarves?
