Ahhh.  And yes.  The act like a floor when closed and block liquids pouring through them.  You'd have a much easier time of just going in from the side and building a wall in the entry spot when you're done.  Unless you rig the hatch up to a lever as a suicide device for your Fort, that is.

I have fourteen picks.  My miners should not be sitting idle as half of them are.  Hrm.  I need to assign more for them to mine apparently.

12 more immigrants.  Full swordsdwarf squad now, but they only have wooden training weapons and steel swords until I'm done with the magma pump so I don't have to waste time getting coke.

If you dig out a long straight channel from the magma sea and build a row of rooms on the level above, you can get some Magma Forges going and never worry about fuel again.

My magnetite, hematite, and limonite deposits are near the surface.

All I have near the magma is galena and sphalerite.

The Forgotten Beast Bosmer Kor Ibruk has come!  A towering three-eyed raven.  It has a pair of fan-like antennae and it is slavering.  Its black feathers are patchy.  Beware its poisonous vapors!

Hm.  Thankfully it seems to be content to wander around aimlessly at the far end of cavern level three.  So, shall I risk fighting it (I have twenty expendables freshly equipped speardwarves), or just shut it out by activating my bridge?

Let's put it up to a vote.  Attack, or shut out. Whichever one gets three votes first gets done.

I vote attack.

Attack, but do it on your terms.  Prepare for it and let it come to you.

The only real way I coudl do that is if I had my miners dig out an area for my speardwarves to gather and surround the beast in.  The third level is a bit of a labrynth, but that can be fixed with careful application of digging and supports.

That's what you need to do sometimes.  With toxic vapor, try not to melee it - kill it with something ranged, even if it's a cave-in.

It MAY be an easy kill, but it also might not be, and if you prepare now you will already have something set up for more dangerous FB's from that cavern in the future.

I'm not using my xbowdwarves for this.  I'm using my speardwarves. They're expendable.

First a ban on exporting bins, now a ban on exporting maces.

I'm glad my mayor is so understanding in her mandates.  I dont' want to export bins or maces either.

Forgotten Beast is dead.  Its poison paralyzed six of my dwarves. No clue if they'll die from it, but it seems likely as they cannot breathe due to the poison.

It's okay though.  They're the expendable squads anyway.

Oh wow.  Thirteen suffocating dwarves so far, not six.  Odd, the others were delayed .

Including one of my miners, hrm.  I'm glad I saved.  I'm probably gonna savescum this as I really don't want to lose a legendary miner (I'm okay with losing both squads of speardwarves, but my miners have actual purpose aside from dying  for the fort).

Before I savescum, however, I'm gonna see just how many dwarves die before the epidemic is contained.

Okay, the epidemic is now over.  Sixteen of my speardwarves died, and one legendary miner.

More tahn enough tombs had already been prepared for this eventuallity, all dwarves were quickly buried, the captains in their appropriate tombs and the rest in communal burial chambers.

Based on the battle reports, it appears that the forgotten beast suffocated itself with its own poison, and that's how it died.

Not through this:
