I just realized I don't have to excavate a clean square and build walls, I just need to excavate around the shape I want.   Derp derp.

Ah well.  I'll probably smooth over the rough walls now that I've switched to this, to make them look better.

And now a miner has trapped himself using ramps...somehow... and is refusing to dig himself out.  What.

Ah well, another miner is being sent to try to rescue him.

My farmer has produced this now:

Ducimdum Zoluth Edan:  Workmouth the Combat of Stirring, a Galena toy axe
Value 16800
Description:  This is a galena toy axe.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is encrusted with galena and morion and encircled with bands of malachite.

Shortest description I've gotten so far...

My magma sea goes from ~Z=92 or so to at LEAST Z=47.

Is this abnormally huge?

That's pretty deep, but I've seen it go deeper.

I hope my candy spire goes that deep before opening up into the circus.  I want some candy chainmail.

FINALLY my miners start to get to serious work on.  They're really cutting away at that stone.

watching legendary miners speed through huge amounts of digging is always great. only time a legendary miner seems to get in the way is when you're trying to train another miner up to join them... (and, with dwarf therapist, that's easy enough to fix. just turn their digging off for a while)

No, I don't think I have anything to worry about when it comes to training new miners.

There's plenty of stone to mine for every dwarf who wants to take up a pick, considering at each z-level I'm hollowing out at LEAST 10x10 or a rectangular equivalent-- if not more, if I find veins of gold (which are disturbingly common here, I get the idea I'm gonna get invaded soon).

FINALLY both of my speardwarf squads are now equipped with mail shirts and leggings, gauntlets, helms, and low boots, and spears-- all made of iron ,and all exceptional or better in quality.  Yes, I know, it's not the ideal armor set (no plate outside of heads hands and legs) but they're meat shields.  They're getting better than they deserve.

Now I have even less qualms about sending them out against any creatures I find that I don't want to risk my other dwarves against.  I mean there's twenty of them, they shouldn't have a problem except against an opposing army or a creature without vital organs to pierce (which would be the domain of my five axe lords in full steel kit, soon to include candy armor and axes to boot).

If you're going to build a Checkerboard to get into the Circus with, make it with natural stone instead of built walls.  I THINK Clowns can break through them with enough patience.

I dunno if that's even possible given the position of the candy spire-- it's sticking out in the middle of a magma sea.

Might be able to make an obsidian checkerboard though with enough patience.

If I build iron hatches will they block magma from pooring down through them?

You want floorgrates.  Magma-proof ones.  The only way in should be from the level below, or you might end up with a missed "cell" of the board.  What's wrong with the level above the magma sea leading down into the spire?

No no, this isn't for the magma sea thing, it's for my magma pump.  I want to be able to block off the staircase I used to get up into the future reservoir without having to floor it open.
