I doubt that very, very much.

So your saying that if he apologized and then deleted it from his hard drive that, No mater what, he would have a severe punishment?
Look, Honesty goes a long way, especially when you confess to something you did wrong. also confessing When and If he gets sued, then the judge is more than likely to be lenient.

Unless you get judge dred, Then your Fucked.

Honesty will often lessen the severity of punishment from your parents. Telling Steam that you tried to pirate a game will put you in no better situation than trying to explain around it, providing you aren't totally inept at doing so. Just tell them, if the issue comes up, that you unknowingly downloaded a malicious program related to Dead Island. Or that you were trying to buy Dead Island. That's what I would do. I'd recommend actually buying Dead Island afterward, if you can remotely afford it; Steam will be far less pissed at you if you say you want to legitimately buy the game.

Try contacting Steam and asking them to reset all of your information to that from a month ago. If you just ask them to change it to something specific, well... If I asked them to change someone's account information to information I know, do you think they'd comply?

And cancel your mom's credit card now. She won't be happy, but this is a situation where honesty is better. Because if you don't tell her about it, she's apt to lose a lot of money. Credit cards can be created anew; she'll likely understand.

How much are the games in total on your account worth? Because that might be the price you end up paying for your piracy. Be prepared to let go of the account if need be; getting it back may prove difficult. Same goes for your e-mail. Also, bad idea using the same password for an account and its registered e-mail. Very bad idea. Very, very bad, for this exact reason. The e-mail is meant as a back-up.

Alright, well whatever happens, I made sure that I got my mom's account put on hold for a while, I changed my information on a ton of stuff, and I asked Steam Support again (And I decided to put in the piracy bit, I know I'll end up being fined a good bit, but as long as I can get this dude out of my mom's account, it's all good)
By the way, to the dude who said "Hopefully this will convince you to stop stealing games in the future.", not be a dick, but piracy isn't stealing, it's copyright infringement (Which is actually more serious legally speaking, but not morally speaking) I copied the game on to my hard drive, it isn't like I went out and stole $60 dollars worth of discs, paper, and video games cases, which is the only monetary value of a video game. By going online and essentially copy and pasting, the business doesn't lose anything. However, if it's a case where I have money, and I like the game enough to where I'd want to buy it, but piracy is preventing me from doing so, then I'm cheating the company of my $60 dollars, but it's never stealing.

Well, unfortunately, I doubt arguing technicalities of the way you are denying them money will make MSH (or anyone else who believes it is) think it is any less stealing.

It is completely stealing. The true content of the game is the files for it, the discs and cases are simply a delivery mechanism not worth anything near $60. Your theft of not only a game being sold, but a new game being sold, directly deprives the developers of a reward for their months of hard work. You are stealing the transaction of money from yourself to the developer in compensation for being given a copy of their work, and that is what the business loses. If that isn't stealing, I don't know what is. Making games for their artistic value alone is nice and all, but it isn't going to pay anyone's bills.

This sort of thing doesn't get people in trouble just because of scammers, you know. It's an electronic black market, hence why the scammers are even there, much like dishonorable drug dealers in their own black market.

Time is money, therefore money is time.  Time can get you more money, but money can't get you more time.  The developers spent a great deal of time, investing their "time-money" into something that would hopefully have some material benefit.  By simply copying what they spent their time making without giving them money, you're essentially stealing the time that they invested, which they can never get back.

So, basically, you're a time thief.

Also, you're potentially costing the honest consumers even more money, or at least giving producers excuses to charge them more money.

Don't do it.

It doesn't matter if it's time, an idea, or few bits of code you download from the internet: If it's meant to come with a cost and you intentionally pay nothing to get around that cost, you're stealing.  Don't try rationalizing.  If certain ideals of "free information" came true regarding software, what would happen?  Well, we'd stop getting new games, because the game makers would go and do something they could feed their family with, and we'd be stuck with nothing but crappy flash games people made up in their spare time.  Folks like Toady who can make a game while living off of donations are extremely rare - Don't take it for granted.

The other reasons you shouldn't do it?  Well, I think you just figured that out.  No further explanation needed, I think.

(I tried making that a little less harsh, but I didn't do so well. :-\ )

First rule of pirating, don't download any kind of program that say's it can crack steam games for you in anyway. Its common sense, really.

And Knight of Fools, I don't want to start a Pirating arguement but pirating doesn't effect sales in a large way. I know of an indie developer that released a pirated version of their game and their sales actually boosted because of it.

Yeah, I mean a guy got 6 months in jail for pirating the move "The Love Guru". They're pretty harsh on these kinds of things.

The RIAA also sued a Russian file-sharing site for 1.2 trillion dollars, and have tried to argue for retroactive copyright infringement in the past.
