Somehow, babies keep ending up in the lava. :|

There's a much-used one-tile path above the lava. Do they crawl in or something?

Have you considered baby-proofing the area?  Not normally necessary, because mothers will tend to carry the child (into battle, even) -- but if something (like death, for instance) incapacitates the mother, baby will start randomly crawling around.

But these babies aren't parentless, and no one has died in my forging area, where I found them.

Do you have bedrooms/sleep areas near the magma?  The babies might crawl off when the parents are sleeping.

No, they're several levels down although the stairs are a few tiles away.

Also, the party room requires you to go past the magma.
