12 layer deep aquifer.
« on: September 19, 2011, 07:27:48 pm »

What?  What is this shenanigans?  How is this even possible?   How can I possibly get past this?

*sigh*

It's all soil.  No veins to dig through for me :(

Hmm.

Well, one thing you could do- for !!SCIENCE!!, of course- is to create a 12 Z-level wooden pillar consisting of stairs surrounded by walls, and then drop it, thus busting through all 12 Z-levels in a cave-in.

That might be dangerous, however...all the more reason to do it.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Use the rings method, the more advanced version of the cave in method.

you could always do the alternating pump trick.  It took me about 2 years but I managed to pierce a 9z aquifer with it

That wouldn't work, as constructions deconstruct when they hit the ground. This would just shatter.

That will not work, constructed walls disassemble on cave-in. You can use obsidian, however.

EDIT: Ninja. :/

It's soil, if I drop it on the lowest layer it's going to just bug and become aquifer.

I hate to do it, but I think I'm going to have to cheat and use DFhack to obsidian cast my way down.  Knowing there was an aquifer I embarked with 27 stone.

*sigh*

No volcano (and actually, it's a 2z deep river valley), so if I'm using DFhack I may as well go the whole way.

You can try and construct a drop ring set but you'd need to import a lot more stone or wood.

Constructed objects deconstruct on cave in.

Constructed object are out of the way. That is common knowledge.

Your best chance for success is to obsidian cast it. Either via DF hack or through your volcano.

This map has no volcano.

The whole point of this was to build something quick and make a set of Candy armor to find in adventure mode, but I'm not sure it's worth even attempting this.  What do you think?

It turns out the aquifer starts immediately below the surface, so I cannot use any type of cave-in method.

Update:

I abandoned it.  It certainly would have been a good challenge, but there were also 37 badgers on the map, so I'd have been doomed shortly after unpause anyways.

Holy shit does NO ONE know how cave-ins work?  "Just build a ring derp" gah, it's obvious we need a refresher course on "how does I crash stone"

No, I know how they work, it just wasn't possible - when I dug a channel it filled with water, there's no way to get under that to collapse it even if you DO manage to dig a ring out.
