How do you build your military?
« on: September 19, 2011, 06:22:52 pm »

This is a simple question: How do you build your military in the current version of .25 (Or in any future release that I have not edited the thread too.)
Please. If its long, put it in spoiler with a colorful title to make the thread easy to navigate! Thank you.
Edit: Short and long are both good.

I generally use axedorfs and marksdwarves. Excessive amounts of meat nobles wardogs help as well.

The above is a fairly sensible way to go about things, I personally let my guys have a lot more freedom of choice, I set metal armor and whatever weapon they prefer, I put them in squads of 2-3 and then make them train constantly, usually at vulnerable sections of the fort like the entrance, or near the caverns, or the crafting hall to prevent mood failures from murdering too many.

I...
1. Set a handful of squads to individual choice everything
2. Pump out countless different weapons out of whatever materials are on hand.
3. Throw the squatssquads at anything on hand: training, monsters, random animals, elven merchants...
4. Hurl migrants at the squads until natural selection develops at least one squad that with impeccable survivability against anything the map'll throw at me.

1. Take a dwarf
2. Give him some sort of weapon you have lying around, either made by yourself, something bought or stolen from a trader or possibly something looted from the corpses of the enemies.
3. Give some sort of armor too, although its not necessary.
4. Repeat 1-3 as many times as I see fit
5. If something arrives, order it to be killed and pray Armok that some of them will come back alive
6. If some of them start racking up a nice killing list, consider doing more effort to keep them alive

Alternative: Clothes are cool, so If I have time, I design an matching outfits for them. And I love giving them masks and cloaks too, for some reason.

I try to make it as difficult as possible to differentiate the Fortress Dwellers from the Military.

Cloaks and hoods seem to be able to go over armor.

  • Danger room up a few levels in armor and weapon (selected by me), and legendary with shield.
  • Then put them on treadmills until they are legendary pump operators.
  • Keep them for fast hauling (grounds clearing) until the legendify themselves in combat from springing ambushes, etc.

Well, my first squad this time was hammer dwarfs.  Just took five useless people and gave them equipment and told them to train.

Then the second one is marksdwarves.  Took a hunter for the leader and our useless peole and gave them equipment and told them to train.

I'm doing it right for the first time right now, as it happens.

I'm having my legendary armorer make ten full sets of ☼iron armor☼  (haven't found flux yet), and melting down all of the failed attempts. then I'll have my legendary weaponsmith (once I get one) make ten ☼Silver Warhammer☼s (or maybe platinum, I've got enough of that around somewhere according to prospector) and equip them with those as well. Then it'll be danger room.

And that's how I'll train up my hammer squad. Any tips on marksdwarf armor?

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

If I can afford to be picky (i.e. I have a good amount of dwarves, with weapon skills) I like to stick to Axes/Swords and mix in a few Spears in case there's some heavy armor.

If I can't afford to be picky, anyone who's got some skills gets drafted. I usually keep at least a few silver hammers and maces lying around.

I'm not that big on marksdwarves, if anything I'll have a few positioned above my entrance or inside somewhere the gobbos can't get to. I've never had any that were massively skilled, but I've had guys who hunted for years straight and could still barely hit goblins.

Just recently I've started Danger Rooming as well. I never wanted to before because it seemed too good, but since regular training is horribly ineffective I put them in there until they have fair skills and then I put them back on training.

I line my entrance with posts for marksdwarfs, and mark each one with a burrow.  Then I group up non-essential dwarfs in squads of 5, and set their orders to 1 train 1 defend.   Since it only uses 40% of the squad, I can draft most the fort, and have them slowly train without worrying about labor shortages.  Whenever there's an attack, I'll have a few already in place and can summon more if need be.

I also have 1 squad of elite melee dwarfs, given the best armor and weapons available.  I don't like using danger rooms, instead I have them beat on disarmed but still armored goblins.  Even with training weapons, they don't last very long.  Exposed parts get smashed to a pulp and they bleed out.

I just use migrants with any weapon ability and throw them in a squad and train them non stop

If they have ranged weapon abilities i put them in an archer squad.

my current fort has one axe lord, 3 sword masters, 1 mace lord, 1 spear master, and 1 elite marksdwarf.
I don't use danger rooms as i heard they mangle babies.

One of my sword masters killed a FB and now he has an artifact Obsidian Short sword

I am currently under my first siege so i will post how that turns out.

By end game I usually have 3 squads of 10 marksdwarves in candy and 3 melee squads (assorted sword, axe and hammer) in candy - except for lead warhammers.

Usually there are around 50 war dogs to go with it and by this point I will have built hundreds of trap components, nearing a thousand, and the entrance hall is somewhere you don't want to be if you're an enemy - you won't be alive long.
