I'm having a blast following this LP! I read all the tutorials for Aurora, but they're nowhere near enough, so reading through this and all the decisions gives me a general idea of what to do :)

Got hilariously bad starting scientists, but I'm going to go ahead anyway :)

I does seem fitting that the romans would conquer and enslave, I have to say! :)

The ground unit types:

Name: Attack%, Defense%
Replacement: 0%, 5% - these are meant solely for replacing the losses of other battalions. They cost only 40, and will replace any losses of any other battalion stationed with them. They're handy to have around to keep from losing more expensive battalions.
Garrison: 0%, 100% - these are meant solely for defense, and cost only 60
Mobile infantry: 50%, 100% - these are good at defense, and decent at offense. Cost 100
Assault infantry: 100%, 50% - the inverse of mobile infantry. Cost 100
Heavy Assault: 120%, 120% - these are the heavy hitters for ground combat. Cost 180
Marine: 100%, 100% - these are meant for boarding combat, acting as 200%/200% in that action. Cost 180

You can also train marine companies (all the above are battalions) which are 1/5 a battalion, and are useful for small scale boarding actions. I usually just use battalions.

Then you also have the HQs.

Brigade HQ: 0%, 20% - Can have 4 battalions attached to them, and their commander bonuses get applied to everyone below them. Training bonus also slowly increases morale of troops beneath them, giving a combat bonus. Cost 150
Division HQ: 0%, 30% - Can have 4 brigades attacked to them, and the same applies for commander bonuses. Cost 250

What really adds up is when you have division and brigade HQs all with good commanders. I have a 30% bonus ground combat guy already ranked high enough to command the division, so he will give a 30% boost to 4 of the brigades. I have some pretty good brigade level commanders too which will be assigned first to the marines then to the assault infantry and mobile infantry. All total it will end up being a very nice bonus.

Oh, and you also have engineer brigades. They're 0%, 50% - but are whole brigades in themselves so really it's more like 0%, 10% when you account for that. They act as a construction factory, and on worlds with ruins will recover them.

Our current ground force assets are:
4 mobile infantry brigades - 2 stationed on Alexandria, 2 on Earth
4 engineer brigades on Alexandria recovering the ruins
2 marine brigades on Earth - the HQ for the 2nd one is still in training, will be done in July 2134.

A divisional HQ will be ready in January 2136, and we're just beginning to train the assault infantry. They won't be ready until around March 2136. Our shipyard won't be retooled until then though, then we have to build the ship - so we have the time to train some replacement battalions during that. The idea was to take the two mobile infantry off Earth to go along with the attack and act as a garrison for the world, with the rest of the forces returning to Earth after the battle. More troops can be trained for Earth later.

I would train a heavy assault brigade, but we don't have that researched yet. The best we have is marines, which were primarily trained for boarding action but will work good in this combat too. When we find a enemy with actual ships they'll see more use as a boarding force to capture enemy vessels.

Oh, and I'm glad folks are enjoying it. I'm having fun running it.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 30th January, 2134

We've completed another 50 automated mines, but have used up most of the stored Corundium. I'm ordering parts for a Salvare class salvager to be built, so we can build one and begin salvage operations in Alpha Centauri.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 18th February, 2134

I've just received a report on 70 Ophiuchi from exploration team 3.

The world that the aliens are on is quite rich in minerals. Another good reason to invade.

Exploration team 3 is heading back to Earth for fuel, at which point they'll head to Lalande 21185 to explore the 2nd jump there.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 8th March, 2134

Our two Frigus III vessels have just launched, and are beginning to haul colonists to our colonies. We can begin construction of the new salvage vessel in a few weeks, once the salvage module is complete.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 18th March, 2134

I'm told the Motala Clan have granted us trade access, and civilian vessels have begun trading with them. If they think this gesture will stop their conquest, they're mistaken. Still, it won't hurt to get them used to seeing our vessels - it should make the ground invasion easier if the ship can fly in and land under the guise of trade.

Our first Salvare class salvager will be finished in three months, then we can begin salvaging Alpha Centari system.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 10th May, 2134

A fantastic find! The 1st Engineer Brigade recovered an abandoned construction factory, and found details of construction rate 16 technology. This boosts our production capability by about 14%.

The MonkeyHead team has swapped from missile tech research to working on the next gen reactor technology. Vibius Salvius is still using 10 labs working on missile launcher and magazine technology however. The plan is to have a next generation, highly fuel efficient engine ready for our missile boats.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 20th June, 2134

The Salvare 1 has just launched, and is headed for Alpha Centauri to begin salvage operations. A Corbita III cargo vessel is breaking off from the cargo group and will accompany them.

I've begun constructing a new naval shipyard, for the eventual construction of missile ships.

The Zebulon team has completed research on laminate composite armor. Now they'll be working on more advanced shield technology.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 30th July, 2134

Aulus Nepius Pantera completed research into ship building rate 750. This increases our ship building rate by about a third, a significant increase. He has now begun a long term project to increase our research rate, although I'm temporarily diverting most of the labs for more pressing research concerns - the new Consuls have been pushing me to get the new missile ships ready for production.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 25th August, 2134

The Salvare returned with the first load of salvage from the non-combat ships destroyed near the jump in Alpha Centauri. They brought back a good bit of minerals, and 9 advanced engines that we can study - as well as some combat drop modules which we already know how to produce. Apparently those ships were some kind of troop ships.

The cargo fleet is going back with them this time since the rest of the wrecks are so far out, so they can salvage the system without having to return.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 25th September, 2134

The colony of Antium is now fully terraformed. The terraforming stations will be moved to the 3rd planet as soon as possible, but may be delayed due to the cargo fleet aiding the salvage operations. We'll see if the civilians will take the contracts.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 15th December, 2134

Two more Fons Vitae class terraformers just launched, and were sent to Mercury. We have 6 there now.

The terraforming installations have all been moved to Struve 2398-A III now, thanks to civilian contractors. The colony doesn't have enough workers to run them all yet, but that's changing as more colonists are sent there.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 20th February, 2135

The salvage team just got back from salvaging the rest of the ships in Alpha Centauri. We collected several thousand minerals and a variety of ship components, some from our ships and most from the enemy ships. We've gained 2000 points toward the new reactor technology, and 13000 points toward the next engine technology. We also learned a bit about capacity recharge rates and particle beam tech from salvaged particle beams, launcher reload rate from some salvaged missile launchers, and ECM from salvaged ECM systems. Plus just from looking at the wrecks we gathered 2720 worth of data on beam fire control range, and 160 for fire control speed rating.

All total it was a pretty significant find, especially what we learned about engine technology.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 19th March, 2135

We've begun mining Luna for the Sorium and Corundium there. I'm having the 50 automated mines we constructed earlier moved there.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 26th March, 2135

I've just gotten a report back from Akigagak and exploration team 1. They surveyed the system of Gliese 570, the one beyond the 2nd jump in Ross 128. They found a promising colony world and some large mineral deposits. They didn't find any jumps in the system other than the one they entered from.

Exploration team 1 is now moving to take the other jump point in Ross 128.

Exploration team 2 also sent in a report from Giclas 9-38, the system off Lalande 21185's 2nd jump point. It has a few decent mineral deposits, and several very cold worlds. They didn't find any other jumps in the system either.

Exploration team 3 is heading to take the 3rd jump in Lalande 21185 system.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 2nd April, 2135

Akigagak reports via the Ross 128-Sol jumpgate that there is a 6200 ton wreck drifting in space in the GJ 1156 system, the system that was beyond Ross 128. The system has nothing that looks like it could support life, so the survey team is proceeding with caution. The only world that even has an atmosphere is 99% carbon dioxide and 1% nitrogen dioxide, with 18.6 pressure and 1271.6 degrees. They'll report back if they find anything, or after the survey is complete.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 12th April, 2135

Exploration team 2 just reported back from WD 1142-645. It's the third system, all surveyed at the same time, with no jumps found. It's a strange trend, and I'm beginning to wonder if our gravitational sensors are faulty.

The only minerals in the system are on a comet, and with no other jumps there isn't much to the report.

Spoiler: WD 1142-645 report (click to show/hide)

Exploration team 2 is coming back to Earth for refueling now, then they'll be headed to explore the jump in 70 Ophiuchi.

I've ordered the factories to begin constructing deep space tracking stations. The plan is to set up listening posts at all of the systems within our jump gate network, to detect and monitor any alien ships that might find their way in.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 12th June, 2135

Alexandria is now fully terraformed, and we've begun colonization of Alpha Centauri-B IV and V. The infrastructure on Alexandria is being moved there, and soon the terraforming installations will be as well.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 23rd July, 2135

The Numerius team has finished research on a new series of sensor packages for our ships. They updated the size 20 resolution 60 and size 10 resolution 1 sensors for the Legion class ships, and the size 0.1 resolution 20 sensor for the Legionary. They've increased sensor range by about 70%, making the new sensor on the Legion capable of detecting ships up to 858m km away. They've yet to design systems for our missile boats, but now that the technology is there it won't be that much more to make specialized sensors and fire controls for them.

Numerius is now working on improved fire control systems. With the upcoming new engines, armor, and sensors we might as well go all out and replace the fire control and turret systems with improved models on our carrier ships.

A 7th Fons Vitae terraformer launched today as well, and is being sent to Mercury.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 15th August, 2135

The 8th Fons Vitae just launched, and was sent to Mercury.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 15th October, 2135

The shipyard has been retooled for the Tetsudo troop transport, and construction is under way. It will be done in June 2136. By then our ground forces will be ready for deployment.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 20th March, 2136

I've just received a report on the GJ 1156 system, the system past Ross 128.

Spoiler: GJ 1156 system report (click to show/hide)

They're now heading to explore the 2nd jump in the system, and will report back when the survey is complete.

The ground forces are ready and organized on Earth for the coming conquest, all we await now is the transport due in June.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 29th March, 2136

Exploration team 3 just reported in on the Gliese 526 system, the one out past Lalande 21185. Not much there, but there are a good many jump points.

They're now moving to take jump 3, and will report back once they've surveyed the system.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 17th April, 2136

Exploration team 2 just reported about Gliese 682, the system past 70 Ophiuchi. It's an empty system, with two other jump points.

Spoiler: Gliese 682 report (click to show/hide)

They're going back in and will be taking the 2nd jump.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 5th May, 2136

The 9th Fons Vitae ship just launched, and is being sent to Mercury. Terraforming Mercury is going well, they've added 0.2681 anti-greenhouse gas so far and have lowered the temperature to 258.09.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 28th May, 2136

The 10th Fons Vitae launched, and was sent to Mercury. Annual production at Mercury is now 0.121 atm.

As part of our tracking station program, we've set up listening posts comprised of 10 DSTS on asteroid 1 in Alpha Centauri, the colony of Antium in Struve 2398, the 1st planet in Barnard's Star, and the 2nd planet in Ross 128. More are still being constructed for other locations.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 4th June, 2136

The Tetsudo 1 just launched, and has begun loading the troops. We have all the troops as planned - two brigades of Marines, one of Assault infantry, two of Mobile infantry, and four battalions of replacements. Our best ground force commanders are in charge of the troops. The Vincere and Legion have been mobilized as escorts, and the Vincere is loading a brigade of mobile infantry as well.

Tribune deSeat von Trubaldsome will be commanding the Legion, and Primus Shec will be commanding the Vincere. Our ground forces will be commanded by Legatus Vibius Mucius Vespillo, an excellent commander who has proven himself both in the battle for the asteroid bases of Alpha Centauri and in defending the engineers on Alexandria from robotic forces. Legatus AussieGuy remains on Earth in fleet command headquarters to monitor things from there.

Legatus AussieGuy has expressed displeasure that he cannot lead the invading forces in the attack, and due to this I've had Galerius detour into researching a flag bridge for our fleet command staff to ride in. The next generation carrier vessels will include a flag variant suitable for important command staff.

A strike force of 20 Legionaries will remain on Earth.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 6th June, 2136

The 1st Legion Assault Force is fully loaded and ready to head towards Motala Prime in 70 Ophiuchi, the Motala Clan's homeworld. All we need is final approval from the Consuls and Senate. The journey is expected to take just over a month, although they will remain in contact with fleet command the entire time due to our jumpgate network and relay station on Antium.

Of course go on with the invasion! However, I'd like to have a brigade of Marine instead of Mobile Infantry in the Vincere. If the Motla Clan got PDCs (or even ICBM bases) the marines will be priceless in boarding them.

Well, the reason the marines are currently on the Tetsudo instead is they're part of the 1st Division to get the 30% boost, since they're better troops than the mobile infantry. Normally the marines are aboard the Vincere for ship capturing, but since the enemy has no ships (they're apparently pre-industrial, no ships or missile bases or conventional industry) it was better to have them with the division for the bonus.

Once the invasion is over the Vincere will have her marines back.

As soon as they're dropped, they'll get the same bonus. It doesn't matter which ship they're travelling in as long as they end on the same planet.

Only if they're in the division, and I loaded the whole division into the Tetsudo. More convenient that way, one order to load the entire division.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 9th July, 2136

They've arrived at Motala Prime, and have unloaded the troops. Attack will begin immediately.

Their signatures have changed a bit, increasing to 17589 Thermal and 175614 EM, but there are no ships in the area. We've detected enemy ground forces with an estimated combat strength of 248, but with their technology level our troops should crush them.

Spoiler: At Motala Prime (click to show/hide)

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 13th July, 2136

Initial combat ratio is 1.6483, and our attack strength is 693.2383.

Spoiler: Initial Battle Report (click to show/hide)

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 23rd July, 2136

Combat ratio is up to 1.7648. We've been crushing their ground units, but they have a significant number. (Based on the names of them, looks like at least 66 since we keep damaging the 66th low tech infantry).

I just got word of a nice find on Alexandria. They discovered 55 Epsilon R300/18 Shields. Thats the next level of shields above what we currently have, so they should give us a significant boost in research by disassembling them. The cargo group is heading there now to pick them up.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 7th August, 2136

The battle continues to go well, but casualties are high on both sides - although they've been consistently much higher on the enemy side. 5th Marine Battalion has suffered heavy losses. The casualties for that unit have been so high the last few weeks the replacements haven't had time to offset it much.

Spoiler: Battle Report (click to show/hide)

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 12th August, 2136

Thanks to the advancements made from studying the found shield systems we've improved our shield technology to match them, gaining roughly 28,000 research points from disassembly.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 3rd September, 2136

The battle for Motala Prime continues, but the scales are tipping more and more in our favor. Combat ratio is now 2.8037. The 5th marine battalion has recovered to 26% readiness thanks to replacements being deployed.

Spoiler: Battle Report (click to show/hide)

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 13th October, 2136

Four months after the attack began, the battle still rages - although the scales have been tipped significantly in our favor by now. After their crushing defeat at this latest battle, the enemy forces are registering as an estimated strength of about 4 on sensors - suggesting that all they have left is one wounded battalion. Our strength is stronger than when we began due to more experienced commanders.

Spoiler: Battle Report (click to show/hide)

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 23rd October, 2136

We've crushed the last of their ground forces, but are having difficulty getting the civilian population under control.

Our defense strength is 851, and the required strength to force a surrender is 2301. It seems we'll need more significantly more ground forces to force the population to surrender.

_________________________________________

I've never invaded such a large population, had no idea we needed so many forces to make them surrender lol...

Anyone had experience with this? Not sure what the best option would be. To get to 2300 we'll need to nearly triple our current forces or better infantry tech. It seems to be using defense strength, so mobile infantry work good for it. We have one brigade training and two on Alexandria we could temporarily move over - but even that would only add like 400ish. We need 27000 more points for the next infantry tech, which will increase the unit strength by 20%. I'm not sure if theres a chance based on how high your defense strength is compared to what's required, or if you have to actually have whats required.

The actual message is:
General ground attack on Motala Prime. No defending units are present and no garrisoned enemy PDCs remain in operation. Defence strength of available divisions is 851.1029. Required strength to force a surrender is 2301.

-edit- just thought, we could research garrison battalion and train them. Could also go around to all the mining bases and collect the garrison battalions, that would be 10 battalions worth.

Nope. You can attack, but it doesn't actually assault the civilians. They take collateral damage while you're fighting the troops, but once the troops are gone the battle ends and they switch to trying to occupy them.

If we wanted to thin their numbers we'd have to either bombard them or poison their atmosphere.

Just gathering the troops we already have scattered around plus the mobile infantry about to be done training we'll double our strength. By training garrison battalions and bringing another load over we'll probably have enough to take them.

I looked on the Aurora forums and apparently the strength required is population in millions times (Determination / 100) times (Militancy / 100). They're apparently a very determined and militaristic race to require 2300 strength with a population of around 3-4 billion.

___________________________________________________________

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 28th October, 2136

The Tetsudo and Vincere are being sent back to collect more ground forces, and I've adjusted most of the labs to focus on ground unit technology (40 labs). We'll research garrison battalions and begin producing them, then focus on improving ground unit strength.

It seems the invasion will take longer than expected, since the enemy is so stubborn.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 28th December, 2136

Another great find on Alpha Centauri, two more construction factories and technical details of construction rate 20.

The Tetsudo is flying around gathering troops in Sol from the mining bases. It will take a few months, as they are widely scattered.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 21st March, 2137

Exploration team 1 has just sent a report back from Ross 128. They explored the jump in GJ 1156 and found the system of Wolf 437, which was empty except for one additional jump.

Spoiler: Wolf 437 survey report (click to show/hide)

They are heading back in to explore the jump in Wolf 437 now, and will report back when they've surveyed the system beyond.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 2nd April, 2137

They discovered a genetic modification center on Alexandria, with enough technical details to allow us to begin genetic research should we wish it. I'm not one to suggest attempting to improve upon what is already perfection, so I'll leave that for the Senate to ultimately decide.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 13th April, 2137

The Tetsudo 1 has gathered troops from all of the mining bases and Alpha Centauri, as well as the mobile infantry battalion on Earth. It's now heading back to Motala Prime with 3 brigades of Mobile Infantry and 10 battalions of garrison troops. This should put us significantly closer to being able to topple the Motala Clan's government and occupy their world. More garrison battalions are being trained.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 16th May, 2137

The Tetsudo has arrived and unloaded the extra troops on Motala Prime, bringing our occupying forces to 1551. We need 2319 now to force a surrender, so we'll need about another 800. In August we'll boost our power by 20% from technological increases, bringing us to about 1861 - meaning we'll need 458 more. Another 15 garrison battalions should do it, although it will take a few years to train them.

Until then, our wealth has just about run out. We were really hoping to have looted Motala Prime by now. I've ceased buying minerals from Comet #2 and Asteroid #22 and have cut the production of tracking stations down to 10% of capacity. I'll see how this affects our budget and adjust accordingly.

Administrator Lucius Amatius Proculus' Personal Log, 25th May, 2137

The budget cuts proved effective, and we're about breaking even after all expenses. This should be a sustainable level of production until we can conquer and loot Motala Prime.

Our tracking station initiative has gone well. We now have tracking stations in:
Struve 2398
Kruger 60
Lalande 21185
Alpha Centauri
Proxima Centauri
Barnard's Star
Kuiper 75
Ross 128
Gliese 570

And of course on Earth. We're constructing tracking stations now for placement on Motala Prime once we've conquered the world. This network of listening posts should be able to detect and give early warning of any alien presence within our jump network. Our technology for planetary sensors is still a bit archaeic, but with 10 tracking stations at each post we can still detect things for a good distance. Once we've dealt with the Motala we can research a bit and improve them significantly.
