I just embarked and what the hell is this?
« on: September 19, 2011, 08:15:28 am »

So after watching a few tutorials i embared the first time ever. I instantly notice the shiny blue rocks under my spawn and its called adamantine so I search on the wiki on it and... Its supposed to be the most valuable rock in the game? The wiki also says that if its on the surface it should be covered by a magma sea but I have no magma at all on the surface and the vaine is even going some z levels up in a really strange way. So is this a bug (just asking since iam new to the game and I dont want to play on a bugged map)

Definitely bugged. That stuff isn't supposed to be anywhere near the surface. I'll leave it at that!

A. Probably would be better served moving this to the "DF General Discussion" board up above.
B. And yeah, that looks like a bug. Similar bugs have included magma pipes that shot up 200 Z-levels and proceeded to fall apart and flood the land. Results from certain registers not being init'd to 0 before generation.

Why don't you want to play near an adamantine spire?

Possibly the lag. Dem 2200+ z-level spires can kill your game stone dead.

Yep, seen this bug before.  It comes up on incredibly rare occasions that an adamant vein won't really have a top on it, and will turn into a physics-defying stratospheric column.  Count yourself lucky and have fun with it.

Also yeah, there's two different "General Discussion" boards, one for Dwarf Fortress and one for not.  You can move the thread with a little button on the bottom of the page.

Cause a cave in with it and watch your computer writhe in pain for a few hours.

Is it really a bug or is it a feature?

In DF those are often synonymous.

So true.

But anyway, you got lucky. If it's your first time playing, use the bug to make some wicked items to give yourself an easy game.

Build an inverse ant colony extending outward from the center of the spire.

I dunno man, it seems perfectly reasonable to adamantium to have a small chance of reaching the surface.

If you want a buttload of adamantine without strict cheating, set the number of caverns to 3, have a ton of layers between the third cavern and the magma sea, and hope one of the spires reaches the third cavern (they occasionally do).

And as a side note, having a ton of adamantine isn't all that great. I had a bugged map once where I had two caverns below the magma sea, resulting in about 80 z layers with 3 adamantine spires to mine. After having 3 fully decked out masterwork adamantine wearing squads, a bunch of furniture made from the stuff, and loads of it just lying around, you kinda wonder what to do next.

I suppose an adamantine castle was in order but I gave up on that map.
