Dwarven medical science challenge
« on: September 18, 2011, 12:00:58 pm »

Hi all,

ok here is the challenge,

Take a mature fort with an existing hospital and access to forgotten beasts that have blood born syndromes.

Copy the fort over to two clone folders:

Copy one is the control. keep your current few dwarves that have medical skill assigned as the doctors and have your military fight the FB in your main dining hall (take a caged FB and build the cage there, lever connect it and station the militia, wait for the troops to assemble, then pull the lever)

record the medical condition of every dwarf entering the hospital and the diagnosis and treatments recieved as well as how long it took to do the treatments.

copy two is the test case. Use runesmith to give EVERY DWARF IN THE FORT WITH NO EXCEPTIONS all of the medical labors enabled. Set up the same FB in the same manner and record the medical results as you did with the control.

Report your findings here.

Now im not trying to question the glory of dwarven !!SCIENCE!!, but what would the purpose of this experiment be? To text the most effective means of dealing with a fortress wide pandemic?

I'm guessing its to see if they can contain the spread of the deadly blood induced syndromes as well as the treatment of it.  Personally, I think the deadly dust would be quite a bit more FUN to experiment with.

I think the absolute best way to do experiments for future Dwardical Science would be the experimentation of using FB syndromes to augment Dwarven combat abilities.
For instance, Syndromes that are things like blood splattered on 100% coverage clothing, to allow the Dwarf inside protection, yet simultaneously allowing him to punch a Gobbo in the face with his Lung Explosion Extract.
The usual stuff to enhance a Dwarfs immuno-Magma system and pain tolerance.
And, of course, the test of curing Dwarven 'Cuddly Wuddly Kitten' syndrome using an equally powerful, 'Cuddly wuddly Killer' syndrom.

So, basically, you want to expose your population to FB syndromes in hope of weaponizing them?

Carry on.

Well, naturally, I believe that in time, we can turn this into a well-oiled machine, with Kitten-Targeting Syndromes, skinless dwarves, and brain-trauma Blood all wrapped up on top of a nice, pig-tail sock.

The drawback advantage, of course, is the fact that the entire Fortress must be militarized, in order to allow for full coverage of all short, hairy, and easily infected subjects.
Of course, you could always just use this same thing to kill off the stupid migrants you don't want.

I've done this before, with some speardwarves stabbing a FB with deadly blood. They stabbed a few gobbos, whose eyes rotted out immediately, but the gobbo blood replaced the blood on their spears, so it's not that useful unless it's a notable 1-on-1. Although in greater numbers it might do quite well against the first wave of a siege.

And THAT, DrKillPatient, is why you must do things in a very specific manner.
Mainly, capturing the FB, throwing it into a cell with one upright copper Spear(So as to allow it to penetrate the body and hopefully cause a wound,) and stab it until there's blood on the floor. Then releasing it from its original prison, and into a pit of lonely despair.
You must then order each and every Dwarf in your military to put on their boots, and stomp around in said blood, before sending them off to fight the Gobbos. Hopefully, the Dwarves will then KICK the goblins, spreading the disease via 'foot to face' method.

Actually guys, I really want to see if we should be relying on two or three medical dwarves of whatever arbitary skill, or if a horde  of dabblers is better to treat a fortress wide syndrome outbreak.
I've seen so many postings in these forums wherein a fort gets an outbreak of syndrome and the fort is either lost or a hack is used to clean the fort. All it takes to overwhelm the small medical staffs is just a few patients, causing needless deaths from infection, leading to posiable tantrum spirals. I'm asking for assistance from the community cause I've not managed to actually capture a FB as of yet.

Yes the intent is to allow a fort to have syndrome based defenses, with the medical system capable of treating your dwarves without deaths from the syndromes, have a safety burrow with the medical facilities booze and food, and other sundry supplies. wall them in and see the enemies all rot to death as they tramp through the same syndrome contaminated hallways that your dwarves normally use. Kills kobolds, grimlins and snatchers, see ambush squads still cloaked yet emitting trails of miasma. (mod in Jubilex for your fort to worship)

If you have FBs, capturing them is not difficult.  Hint: you don't need a GCS.

I don't believe that all FBs are BD2 anymore, but enough are that it doesn't matter.  You probably have to extend this hallway a decent ways-- the goal is to capture a single FB, and get the bridge closed behind it before more get it.

After that, you're pretty much set for syndrome testing.  Dust is better than blood-- you've gotta wound the FB to get blood, after all, whereas some tough dusters can dust all day long.  Vapors are even better.

Details of the FB containment depend on what kind of syndrome you've got.  Dust?  Fortifications on the side, drop a dog in to get them to spew dust all over.  Vapors?  Fortifications on the side, just send melee dwarves in against the forts.  Blood?  Training spears, maybe-- dump in some items via locked hatch so that you can get the most out of the blood.

In my experience, weaponizing FB extract is just too damned slow.  It means a week-long path from your map-edge to your depot, that can be adjusted depending on if you want to kill or don't want to kill.  It's not effective compared to other options (although it's still cool).
