33g, undermined trees dissapear

Just like the title says. If i can undermine a wall and get a stone block. Undermining a tree should result in a fallen log.

Not really. If you bust up a tree, you're not likely to get much except chips of wood and bark.

I agree with OP...as long as the tree only falls one or two levels.

This sounds more like a suggestion than a bug report!  I think it makes sense, certainly a tree without any soil below it is going to die... maybe even fall in. I'm pretty sure there's more planned with trees, to exist in different Z-levels... tree roots will be part of that I'm sure.

Well, it shouldn't be a nice log that's already cut well and fit for building.

The game doesn't really track the 'shape' of wood.  If it ever does, things will be...  much harder, especially on maps with very little wood.  The last time it came up, Toady wasn't sure whether it should or not...  anyway, as long as it isn't, this should just produce the same sort of generic wood you get for cutting a tree down (the only sort there is.)  If more details are added for tracking what's done to wood, then this can be represented in more detail as well, but right now, if you knock over something large and woody (whether it's a tree, wall, or whatever) you get immediately usable wood back.  There's no reason why digging under a tree should be any different.

Say what? Were not MINING the tree, just digging out the soil and roots. The roots do not matter because when we cut down the tree we leave the stump in the ground anyway.

Its not really that realistic, but neither is getting whole logs back when demolishing wood workshops. Things are going to be abstracted like this for a while yet.

Heh if you want a good idea of "complicated" wood go dig up my posts on "wood v2.0", it even has a picture :P
