I'm still getting the hang of metalworking and freeze everytime someone takes up the blacksmith's forge. Thankfully they usually want billion or brass, which I've plenty of. Lately though rough gems have made go think, "Shit." Early on glassmaking is another one that makes me wonder what the bodycount will be like. Thankfully so far *knock on ore* if they go insane it's them starving themselves to death by just wandering around.

I don't think they're actually wanting billon or brass, but since you have mostly billon or brass they go for that.

I don't know why some people think that moody dwarves will only go for certain types of a material - were there former versions that asked for specifics?

It isn't that they do. It is that they can. Be it bug or intentional, it happens.

I survived that mood, I did not survive the ambushes the billon spiked bar (With engravings of oluns mother in green glass, and chains of copper, and serrated blades of silver... ETC.) of soap caused. So the pre-military fortress was lost. I'm shocked that actually started a discussion!

I have been playing for a few years, I just havent gotten on the forums, since I never really had a reason. I generally have a cloth industry running in the first few seasons, and a green glass industry up the next year to train my gem-cutters instead of wasting the good gems I get. As for metal, I rarely have trouble with it cause I usually start at a riverbed, without an aquifer, at normal temperature. This causes me to get some unusually valuable metals early, before I strike the earth and start from copper again (This time it was in the form of tetrahidrate instead of native copper!) I do have some weird traditions when it comes to fortress building. I always will fully exploritory mine the first Z level that has valuable ore then speed rush to given the nicknames of candy and clown circus, must be called something like the bubble bath, and have fun watching my dwarfs licking each others candy shirts with glee!

IIRC, in the 2D version they did want specific metals, stone, gems, and checking the dwarf's preferences was a way to figure out what they wanted.

I had a metalworker go moody on me. He liked blue metal. I quickly designated all blue metal wafers as forbidden. The dwarf sulked in his shop until I reclaimed them.

I'm not sure if I'm screwed?  I mean... my bowyer got into a fey mood and asked for logs and silk.

I have logs.  But I do not have silk.  However!  I was about to go into the underworld anyway.  So I might end up getting some soon.  Course I might also let a troll into my fort.

Either way it should be fun.

So...  strange mood...    he grabbed a cut smoky quartz and a bar of [candy] (ed: spoilers, people!).   Wonder what I'll get.
....
I got a table.  Oh well, at least I gained an 18 legendary blacksmith out of it.

"Oh well?"  I'd murder half my f'ing fortress for an artifact candy table.  And the others wouldn't dare even frown because they'd be too busy on their knees, weeping ecstatic tears in awe at the glory of my new dining room.

Specific mood material requests are still in.
They're rare but they can happen. And when they do, their demands are absolute, they will not settle for anything else but what they're asking for.

On the bright side, the only times I've had that happen has been with metal. Not sure if it counts for all materials. Also, god damn yarn demands. Also god damn yarn cloth producing by yourself is bugged at the moment, so you need to remember to buy your yarn cloth from the traders, thread you can make by yourself.

EDIT: Considering the post below it's far more likely it's just some wankery with my DF mods rather than a problem in the game mechanics.

Otungan
This is a birchen crossbow.  All craftsmanship is of the highest quality.  It is decorated with birch and encircled with bands of ash.  This object menaces with spikes of cave spider silk.  On the item is an image of waves in maple.

Anyone notice something odd about this?

Well lets break it down in pieces.

Otungan

OK, a birch crossbow.

Artifact goodness?

It is decorated with birch
So...  the decoration is made of the same wood.

and encircled with bands of ash.
Birch and ash look terrible together...

What is this?  How does that even work?

So our dwarf has a thing for water.

It's strange, but not exceptional.

Mostly the silk spikes.  Which are apparently menacing.
