Glad things seem to have worked out, hope your roommate is okay.

Hm, I thought acetaminophen inhibited an enzyme in alcohol's metabolic pathway and caused a pretty toxic intermediate to crop up. Or vice versa, toxicology was last fall so I can't remember the details. It's not a death cocktail or anything, sorry if I sounded overly dire.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I *think* they are two separate pathways. I might be wrong, though, so don't take my word for it in that regard (for me, toxicology was three years and a half ago)

If he kicks the bucket don't you instantly graduate with all A's? I saw that in a movie somewhere.

Urban legend.

Also, if he did this once, he's going to do it again. If he's also into illegal stuff, which I wouldn't doubt given his love for alcohol, that puts you in danger because anything he's caught with will also be charged to you as well because you're his roommate. Then your college will kick you out without credit transfer and advise all other colleges to not accept you, not to mention your shiny new criminal record.

In short, get a new roommate before he inevitably fucks you over.

Dubious reasoning. There are plenty of people who drink who aren't into illegal stuff.

But not many who get near-death drunk.

Agreed. Stupid people are stupid, but not all levels of stupidity are equal.

Even if he isn't into illegal stuff, someone who gets that drunk isn't someone I'd advise living with. The level of drunkenness being described here all but destroys one's decision making capabilities. It's just asking for trouble to live with someone like that.

Before you doing any thing drastic, I would recommended you just have an honest conversation with him.

Pretty much anyone at all can end up badly drunk in the right circumstances. This is specially true if that someone doesn't have much experience with alcohol as a whole.

Your logic is flawed, MSH. People I know who get majorly drunk regularly are not the same people I know taking cocaine and/or ecstasy. I knew a girl once who refused to drink alcohol, but took a monthly dosage of E.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

Yea guys try to remember this is college, it's reasonable that your roommate is going to get drunk. I am sure you will be in the same position sometime in your college career OP.

When that happens, you should kick yourself out of the house.

Yea, a college freshman in September, probably one of his first really drunk nights.  Likely had a bunch of older, more experienced drinkers edging him on too.  Part of college is learning your limits, and hopefully your roommate now has an upper bound that he'll never cross again.  Calling the paramedics might have been a little too far, but I suppose you can never be too careful.  You did do the right thing, looking for help from someone more experienced and with authority.  At the very least, you legally shifted responsibility away from yourself, and at best, you may have saved your roommate's life.  But that's for the doctor to say, not me.

Just remember, always put them to sleep on their stomachs, so they don't drown in their own vomit.  Trying to get them to vomit in the toilet before going to bed is a much better solution, though(vomit leaves a terrible stench on the sheets).  Have them drink a bit of water after vomiting, and a cracker or two can also help.  Know that they might not be able to respond coherently to your questions, but keep up positive narratives anyhow ("you're gonna be alright, everything's gonna be fine").  It gets them in a more relaxed mood and ready for a deep, deep sleep.

Finally, remember that if you help a guy out when he's hammered, he'll probably help you out if the situations are reversed.  Welcome to College!

As to the other conversation, I've lived with a guy who only got terribly drunk and never touched drugs, a guy who only got high and never touched alcohol, and a guy who loved both to great excess(yay random room assignments).  It's all personal preference, and one certainly does not imply the other.
