I just upgraded from .18, whats new?
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:54:55 pm »

Hit me with it.
New creatures, metals, what?
I went to edit my RAWS to remove aquifers from dirt/sandstone and I saw something called "Fire Clay". What's that?

The new version has, among other things, clay, wich can be collected and turned into stuff, even used as a building material. Most clay containers need to be glazed if they are to hold drinks, but things made from fire clay do not.

Also, farming on soil without needing to muddy it.

Lots of other stuff, but the wiki can explain it better than I could ever do.

Basically?  Clay can be worked at a kiln/magma kiln, expected creatures lay eggs in constructed nest boxes, expected creatures can be sheared for wool, bees can do things you'd expect bees to do, the hospital actually does things you'd expect it to do, mineral scarcity can be set in worldgen, and oh god badgers, oh god.

oh god badgers, oh god.

This sums it up.

I actually abandoned a fort shortly after embark when the unit list showed 23 badgers on the map.

First thing I notice: I always remove Microcline, Orthoclase, and Alunite from my game. Not this time: it needs Orthoclase for some reason?

Also, it doesn't tell me what layers of stone I have, just "metal", "dirt", "flux".
I'm going to go back to .18

I'll give it a shot, I guess.
I chose a volcano that said "deep soil", "clay", "flux stone".
I set mineral scarcity to 75000 in advanced gen.

Choosing loadout....why the hell do they bring Bronze tools? Thats expensive.
Looking at animals, nice expansion.
Wait. Cavy Boars? Guinea Pigs???? HELL YES. I love those damn furry critters.
Not going back to .18

Uh, ok. Looks like I don't have access to Copper. or Iron, but I do have Steel and various Bronzes.

by setting mineral scarcity to 75000 in world gen, you've ensured that the world has nearly no metals. At all. Metal aquired by reactions, such as bronze and steel are still available to the civ. When setting mineral scarcity, lower = more. Also, keep in mind that grazing animals such as cows now need to graze, or they'll die.

Go for a site with shallow metalS and deep metalS if you want to have more minerals in one site than was ever possible in .18.

Are guinea pigs grazers?
Also, if I bring a giant eagle egg, will it hatch?

Steel, Bronze, Brass, Rose Gold, Lay Pewter, etc, all the alloys, are given for free.  There's a reaction that generates them, so any civ with those reactions WILL have those materials.  That's why dwarves can lack any ore, yet still come with steel and bronze, and steel anvils get expensive.

Set the scarcity to 100, "less is more".

Also, you get used to the barren embark display.  It adds a little flavor to the game, you're never quite sure what you're gonna get, and it keeps things from getting too boring.  You're forced to adapt and change, enjoy the game for its survival aspect as you work with what you've got.  We as a community have grown soft on constant steel and gold mood statues.  Dwarf up.  Don your leather armor and wooden axe, and go slaughter 10,000 zombie bull sharks.  Your beard has lost its luster in these years of plenty.

NINJA: Cavies are grazers, but just barely.  They don't produce food when butchered, but can make good cheap pets and skulls.
Eggs hatch if there's a male on the map, and only if the eggs were hatched while the male was there.  Treat it realistically, Toady didn't half-ass this stuff.

....so, no cavy meat? damn. Oh well. Still cute little bastards.
Can they graze undeground? I know from experience they're OK with eating mushrooms.

Only if it's grass.  If you breach the caverns, then cave grass starts to grow on underground soil and on underground mud.  So you can muddy a pasture deep underground and get colorful cave grass for grazers.  Currently all grass is pretty much identical, except bamboo because it's the only thing pandas eat.

I wasn't good with collecting sand in the old version.
How do I collect sand/clay now? I've got a zone with "clay" and "sand" enabled, and dug out some clay/sand nearby, but nothing was gathered.

I want ore to be rare, but not too rare. Would 10000 be good?

Try 2000 with a small world (for fast gen) and use DFhack to take a look and see if you like it.  If not, adjust from there.
