the item isnt on the list when i look in spacific weapons in the [W]eapons tab in the [E]quipment tab in [M]ilitary

I think I know what's happening.  It's still assigned to the position of the guy who used to carry it.  Yeah, the dead guy.  Dying won't unassign it from that position.

Go to the military equipment screen, and look at the old position-- the dead guy's position.  Unassign all equipment from that position.  Now, it should let you assign the specific weapon, and your dwarf should be happy to run out and pick up the steel axe.

nope that wont change a thing nil, i can equip a mace that is already being held by my main macedwarf on someone else, and the dead guy was never in my military.

Also, I'm not certain, but it might follow the same thing as arrows, where some are for woodcutting, and some are for war. I have no idea honestly, never bothering with the military myself beyond marksdwarves.

he used it to chop trees till he got a fey mood asking for stuff i didn't have and i posted 8 of my way too damn many war dogs on him and forbade the axe and dumped it and reclaimed it to remove it from him, he died but i think that might have been before the crash i had and no one would even touch the axe and still wont
