what is this virus?
« on: September 17, 2011, 04:21:46 pm »

I keep getting this JAVA/EXPLOIT virus. I don't know where it is coming from, and I don't know what it does. I've tried searching for the answer, but all I could find was how to remove it, which I could do anyways. Could anyone shed some light on this, please?

isn't the fact that you know how to remove the virus the only thing necessary to know anyway? Are you considering keeping it on your computer like a puppy?

The thing is, I don't know what it does. I've been changing my passwords just in case, even though the info is stored server side.

I actually used to do something like that back in the day. I was the main anti-virus person on staff in college, and a contact liason with Virus Bulletin, back before AV manufacturers published lots of data on virii in the wild. As part of what I did, we maintained a "zoo" machine with a sample of every virus we found in our network. I'd go to the infected machine, pop in a blank floppy and do whatever I needed to do to get infected, then ported it over to the zoo. Then promptly shredded the floppy disk.

I used to get about 10 Java exploits daily. Your virus scanner SHOULD remove it. If it dosen't, it's probably shit. I made my virus scanner delete the viruses by setting my scanner into strict scanning mode

If you leave it long enough, it WILL infect other files.

It was removed each time I got it, and I scan frequently.

Ah, XKCD. I remember getting Blaster or as it was known back then in 2003 - MSBlast.exe on the then new family PC and amazing my parents by repairing it (It was our first computer besides the ancient 3.1 we had for tinkering) in a matter of minutes.

They then trotted me around to EVERY SINGLE FAMILY MEMBER to get rid of Blaster on their computers too. Norton Stinger came in real handy until my Aunt's computer was found to not only have Blaster, but the Doom virus and innumerable spyware. I stretched my then limited knowledge and came back with a tiny little program called Spybot S+D which was then just starting off... and repaired her computer to near perfect condition. Except for Hotbar. That thing never went away until i reformatted the computer. :D

I was viewed as a hero and a medic by the family for about three days afterwards. :D:D:D:D

As for viruses, java exploits aren't anything to worry about provided you get rid of them quicksmart. Invest in a good firewall- As you're a B12er i'd assume you have better than Windows Firewall, hehehehe.

Our now ancient family PC has had just Blaster, way back in 2003, and a hijacker in 2004, and nothing since.
My laptop has had a fair few PUPs but due to my firewall sandboxing most programs they've not done anything. Comodo Defense+ ftw. :D

I did remove it first, but I seem to keep getting it and I don't know where from or what exactly it does.

Ah. How long are the infections spaced out and what websites do you go on? I got my infections from some shifty sites that seemed legit 'till I did an internet lockdown.

Note: An internet lockdown is when you only go on websites you 100% trust. When I say websites you 100% trust, I mean stuff like Bay12, stuff that has all evidence pointing towards it being a clean site. I also suggest not going on sites with popups, as popups can spread viruses. Eventually, I started going on other websites, one by one until I had rooted out the source of the infection. I never went on those websites again.

Do you have any more details? If you keep getting it, it's likely from a site you keep visiting. Of course, false positives do exist, but it's better to be safe, or at least narrow down the possibilities.
