Early sieges are not so interesting and more readily dealt with.
Don't ruin my fucking Fun!

I want to work it out myself. (e.g. oh shit, that guy's riding a giant cave swallow, he flew right trough my defences! wait, the dwarves are running away from him, to outside the fort where they won't get massa- oh fuck, I forgot about the other invaders)

And this is exactly what happens all too often.

Also, is it just me, or does the current version crash when you attempt to (f)find a site with aquifers on anything other than (n/a)?

Aquifers are not hard to breach, and I find them useful in conjunction with a river or cavern lake connecting to the edge of the map for infinite power generation.

I don't really give a damn about infinite energy generation, TBH.

...yet

You will if you get to the point of building pump stacks.  Just sayn'.

But, ok, in the meantime, move along.

Dwarf up and revel in what's become of your Fortress.  It's more fun that way.

That said, your fort's still alive with usable dwarves.  You can rebuild, learn from your mistakes... and set three masons to do nothing but grind out coffins.  It's going to take YEARS to bury them all, i know because it happened to me.  tantrummed 200 dwarves down to about 70, plus accidents and incidents while burying the initial amount.  In the 40 years of Knifemurders, there's only been TWO times I haven't needed more coffins. (it's a wonder I ever got migrants at all, really).  Oh, and you might not get migrants this year or possibly even the next with a population drop that big.

And really, do bury them.  You don't want to know what a fort with 20+ active ghosts is like... Especially when some decide to start producing miasma and haunt a specific dwarf.

I had a friend watch me play while I was explaining to him what the game was.

He asked what that big engraved room with statues was. Obviously it was important as it was the most beautiful room in the fortress. I told him it was the crypt. There were 400 coffins in there, and I had already filled half of them by the end of the sixth year.

The moral of the story is: MOAR COFFIN'S!

NEEDS MOAR COFFINS

All the dwarves are buried now, but some of the goblins are producing miasma.

This is how all fortresses should end. A massive siege, a breakdown of backup plans, clowns, and a Last Stand. Good job on surviving it!

It was really hard, to be honest.

I filled about 200 in 2-3 years from the Tantrum Spiral.  Knifemurders is about 40 years old now and it's up around 850+ filled coffins.  Also, i think the Dwarven Civ is dead.  They have no notable dwarves in the civ menu....

Tantrum Spiral Delayed after several migrant waves.   I'm up to 397 filled coffins.   And down to 47 dorfs.

Ouch.  Did you try locking the tantrumm'ers in the dining hall and just leaving them to it?

I isolated them but some died (some were violent) and the unhappy thoughts from friends caused more death.

Edit:   The fuck?

I just had a Dwarven child suicide in a magma pipe.   What the fuck?

EDIT02: He fell through it and revealed a candy vein.

"Oh no, a child hurled himself into the magma"

Hehehe! :D That was a truly awesome story.
I love how things seem to catch fire purely for effect during large battles... ???

I think it was a she.

To be fair, their mother had her back broken by a thrown chair and is going to be in the hospital for the rest of her life (short life, the doctor tantrumed too and isn't treating her, she's bleeding to death) and her father was killed too.

Things have been unhappy, but the trigger was that stray troll wandered up and killed the NEW strand extractor (WHY ARE YOU KILLING ALL MY STRAND EXTRACTORS???) before a crossbowdwarf killed him.

Hehehe! :D That was a truly awesome story.

I have no idea why the wood stockpile would have started on fire.  Any ideas?

EDIT:

Sonofa.   I just got a dwarf ghost.  Where'd that come from?  there are no dwarf remains...

Also, I figured it out.

There was a door with 3 (7/7) tiles of magma behind it (sealed off past that by obsidian) on the edge of the wood stockpile from an earlier incident in the fortress.

A troll smashed the tightly closed and forbidden door.  Magma pours out, settles on logs 1/7 depth and logs burst into flames.  Fire spreads.
