I agree, balancing is a problem with the single fights.

The idea is that ideally, for each day of fighting, the average gladiator sees their wealth increase by ten to twenty percent. This is reflected in the prize money for beating another gladiator - a win against someone with an equal wealth will get you 20% of your wealth.

I also want to make it that the rate of increase is larger in absolute terms for those who are wealthier, but larger in relative terms for those who are less wealthy. This is why I have changed the prize system for the tournaments so that people in the lower ranked positions still get prizes. This is also why I have the current tournament in pairs, so those who are less wealthy have a chance of being paired with a strong partner. I am also planning to have the next tournament consist of gladiators not using their own equipment and using temporary identical equipment, to dampen the advantage that wealthy gladiators have. I'm always on the lookout for ways to boost the lower players.

I'm hoping to have the title system provide an incentive for the higher ranked players to let the lower ranked ones catch up - The title holders will tend to be higher ranked people, who must spend time going through title disputes and not more efficient courses of action.

I included the single fights with the intention that they would be an option for people who are starting off, as a duel with another gladiator at the beginning would net you an expected 5 urists, which is pretty dismal. However, I probably included more than I should have. When I was setting it up, it was with the intention that as your gladiator gains more wealth, the single fights become less appealing and the gladiator duels become more appealing. As it turns out, though, the current set up means the single fights will be appealing for a lot longer than intended.

There's a potential rule that I'm thinking about implementing and would like feedback on, as well as two that I will implement.
Potential new rule
Whenever a gladiator will recieve a prize from fighting another gladiator, then M, the arithmetic mean of the other gladiator's wealth will be calculated. If W is the prize-recieving gladiator's wealth, then the prize is multiplied by M/W.

The proposed rule would be very effective in keeping the player wealths competitive. If it was a duel and you had the same wealth as your opponent, your prize would be unaffected. If your wealth was double your opponent's, then the multiplier would be 1/2. If your wealth was half your opponent's then the multiplier would be 2. It is quite effective at boosing new players, but I worry that is might prove unpopular.

Changes to the game rules:
I'm going to remove the bull fight option and lower the rewards for the gorilla and jaguar fights to 75 and 40 Urists respectively.

Furthermore, in order to buy a pet you must spend a day fighting it without the aid of any of the pets you already have. Only if you can fight and beat it will you then pay the money and obtain it.

Good changes, in my opinion.

I'll admit, I cringed when I saw you said what the new single-fight rewards were and that you would be removing bulls, but I think it's for the best. I definitely look forward to the the "little guys" catching up and giving the over-achievers a run for their money. :P

It was more that I was making a list, and I picked some arbitrary animals: Wolf, Jaguar, Gorilla, Bull. I then pitted them against each other, and I saw a single bull beat two gorillas, etc. I then decided that a bull should therefore be worth two gorillas, a gorilla worth two jaguars, etc. It was a pretty crude measure, and it was going to need refining at some point.

I like the new changes. I had to think about it for 5 min before it clicked how it worked :P. (naturally, I'm glad I defeated a jag before the changes. I found that quite tough to get :P)

The pets rule is genius. I like that one.
It's because there may be animals which are very cheap, but also very dangerous. By imposing such a rule, it prevents people loading up with such animals until they have invested significant wealth in their own stuff, which lessens the unbalancing impact that such animals could have.

Sorry about the delay. It started as wanting to wait at least twenty-four hours between the update changing the forum game rules, but I have been at the last minute called up to help with university freshers. I can get at my computer for brief snatches, but a full update tends to require a couple of solid hours to run and type up, which I haven't been able to get to do for the past couple of days, I'm afraid. I'll try to squeeze one in as soon as possible.

It's just the past few days and the next few days that are so hectic. If I'm lucky I'll be able to squeeze in an update or two during that time, but at any rate, we should be back to a solid update schedule after all the shennanigans at the start of university term are sorted out.
