Cowlicks and Weird Correlations
« on: September 16, 2011, 07:45:10 pm »

So, if you have a counterclockwise cowlick, you have a higher chance of being left-handed...and of being gay.

Just a couple of interesting studies that I stumbled across today...the link is to the abstract, you can see the full text of the articles if you click on "Free PMC Article" at below the abstract.

Cue people checking what direction their/their friends/family member's cowlicks whorl.

Don't tell Fox News this or they'll be warning parents of the dangers of cowlicks turning their kids gay.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

My father has a counterclockwise cowlick, and he is indeed left-handed. Not gay, though.

I found this pretty hilarious.

My Cowlick is not counter-clockwise, as my sexuality would suggest, but I'm right-handed.

Huh. This actually all kinda makes sense. I would think then that there's an added correlation of left-handedness (and associated right-hemisphere brain activity) and homosexuality. Lefties, by virtue of the right-brain activity, are supposed to be more artistic, perceptual, abstract etc. as opposed to the concrete, mechanical left-brain activity of right-handers. Homosexual men (on average) tend to be more artistic, flamboyant, etc.

I'm sure there's been a study out there on this. Why, yes there has. Several in fact.

Obviously you're an asexual amputee who has no hands.

I actually thought that brain-sided correlation between abstract and concrete thoughts was BS? Hrm, time to do some research.

EDIT: Looks like it's just vastly overstated in importance, which is pretty standard. Sort of "There's a trend in the general direction of X" leads to cries of "X!" thing. Anyway the point is that I was wrong, there is evidence there.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
