Gem cutting bug?
« on: September 16, 2011, 07:09:59 pm »

My gem cutter has finished polishing all of the amethysts and aquamarines.  The rough indigo tourmalines/rose quartzes are sitting in a bin right next to his workshop, but the option to cut them doesn't show up on the menu.

No burrows, gems/bins not forbidden/tasked for hauling, workshop components not forbidden, no burrow restrictions.

Thoughts?  I'm going to try making a [j][m] work order.

I had a similar problem that was caused by the magical wall that is a part of the jewelers workshops, ie if you build it in a 3 tile wide space it blocks everything either left or right of it, I honestly can't remember which direction is blocked. This is likely not your problem, but I can't really think of anything else right now as its time to put the virtual dwarven ale aside for some good old human beverages. I hope you get your answer soon, it seems like such an undwarfy thing to hold back a fortress... shiney gems... at least its not wood.

The three tiles on the right side of the jeweler's workshop are impassible.  Most likely, you have built your jeweler's workshop in such a way that it blocks a passage on the right side, and he can't reach the bin.

thehippopotamus, Sphalerite - That's not it--(I lost a lot of crafters to starvation before realizing that workshops had impassable squares  >_>)--I haven't organized the crafters into their cantons yet, so the jeweler's workshop is (temporarily) just chillin' in a big open circular 9x9 empty room.  The blocked tiles are closest to the stairs, but the workshop is free on all sides.

Gem cutting through [j][m] worked fine, but the newly-mined rough gems still aren't showing up in the workshop menu...  The rough and cut gem stockpile is right next to the workshop--haulers are stowing the rough gems there, without any problem, and the cut gems are moved there too.

Gonna try tearing down the workshop and building new ones.

Huh, I've never seen this problem before, except with glass encrusting of course.

1) You say that the gems are cut just fine if you request jobs through the manager. After being cut, are the gems available for encrusting without using the manager??
2) Do you have any mods active?

The gems showed up as available for encrusting; don't have a gem setter yet, so I didn't try.

I've tweaked with the raws--used [NO_EXOTIC]s, added a couple aboveground spiders (a la phantom spiders, but for different biomes).  Also using a tileset downloaded to make an abandon megaproject look better.  Nothing serious.

Tore down the workshop, built a new one on the other side of the stockpile, and it seems to be working.

It's happened before...  maybe pathing errors?  Or building the workshop before any raw gems are mined?

If items are tagged to be hauled, then they dont appear in the workshop menus.  Same applies to recently made furniture and trap items.  Waiting until they get hauled to a stockpile usually does the trick.
