Constructed rooms
« on: September 16, 2011, 06:45:27 pm »

So, bedrooms for dwarves...   Can I build them constructed?  I would assume yes, but I'd like this confirmed before I spend the time to do it.

It also seems like it would require excessive micromanagement.  Is there a best way to do it?

What do you mean by "build them constructed"? Out of built walls and floors? Yes, that's possible. I've built many above ground forts with actual rooms in constructed houses. You only need to build a roof (floor on the level above it) over the rooms to be able to place furniture if it's outside.

Why would it be more micromanagement than just digging them out of the rock? Build a bed inside, q over it, press r to make a room and that's basically all. As soon as a dwarf sleeps in the room, he'll claim it and is now the owner.

I have to designate the walls and the floors too and don't seem to be able to do it all at once.

But, ya know, who cares if an in-game year takes 8 hours, it's Dwarf Fortress, right!?

You can build multiple floor/wall tiles at once. After b-C-(w for walls, f for floors), hit u and k to increase the number of wall/floor tiles you're building.

Macros help.  And don't assign the bedroom to a dwarf, just make it a bedroom and leave it.  Whoever sleeps in it next will claim it as their room.

Yeah I know, it makes it a ton faster but it's still annoying as hell.

I already just make it a bedroom and leave it.

And, MORE importantly, Shift-Enter when picking building materials so you don't need to hit Enter like five billion times during mass construction.

Unless you're going for a cool looking pattern of stone.

Unless you're going for a cool looking pattern of stone.

This is why macros exist. Learn them, use them, and interesting architecture becomes much more feasible.
