What have you cooked/baked up real good lately?
« on: September 16, 2011, 04:18:51 pm »

I didn’t see any topic like this, at least not recently, so…

I like cooking. And I like baking. I’m not all that good at either, but they’re good ways to pass some time.  Also, the end result is tasty foods, and who would complain about that?

I just finished baking an apple tart type thing. It’s got fresh apples, and just a little bit too much cinnamon.

For dinner I did something I don’t remember the name of, but it has chicken and a nice white sauce and some semi fancy cut carrots and potatoes. I have a terrible memory for the names of things. It’s something French, I think. Probably named after some dead guy.

How about you? I want to hear about amazingly fancy recipes. Or perhaps the time you microwaved ramen and licorice together. Either way.

Just the other day I made cookies, and they were pretty awesome.

... I'm not much of a cook.

I... stuck a frozen pizza in the oven. That's about the extent of my cooking ability. The fanciest thing I do is boil pasta.

Me and my cousin were able to make some damn good sweet and sour chicken (American Chinese style) a few weeks ago.

He has permanent parks where the spattering fry oil hit him. We both agreed it was worth it, though.

Today I baked a frozen pizza. It didn't turn out well.

Previously when I cooked one of these pizzas, it was burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. This time I turned the temperature down and cooked it longer... and I got something burnt on the outside and almost done on the inside. Next time, even lower temperature.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Macaroni and cheese is really good with alfredo and tabasco sauce replacing the milk.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I've been getting back into my Japanese cooking mood recently, and have been making Onigiri (Rice balls) and Tamagoyaki (Really sweet omlette-like thingie) for my lunch for the last week or so, to bring to school.

I want to find some red beans/red bean paste, because I've never seen any but it sounds really good...

Just made my pasta salad the other night.

1 pnd Rotini Pasta
3 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
Sliced Shitake Mushrooms
Fresh Garlic
Diced Cucumber
Chopped Black Olives
Crumbled Garlic and Herb Feta Cheese
Parmesan/Asiago/Romano Cheese Mix
Paul Newman's Caeser Dressing

I boil the chicken then peel it into strips and rub a little soy sauce into it, to give it some saltiness and flavor back.

I saute' the mushrooms in garlic and olive oil before sticking it in the fridge with the rest of the veggies to chill.

I put the cheese and dressing on it to order...otherwise it doesn't keep quite as well.

Love this stuff. It feeds me for a week.

Sounds like your oven isn't cooking things at a uniform temperature.

My sister has cooked with red bean paste before, it's pretty dang tasty from what I remember. Just a little bit sweet. Apparently it's sometimes served with ice cream and fruit?

Actually I just made some bread today for a potluck tomorrow. This recipe with about half the sugar. I've also made a rosemary bread before.

One of the other things that I make from scratch occasionally is a damn tasty pizza using this crust and this fantastic sauce (minus anchovies and honey). Somehow I manage to get an almost deep dish style pizza with only a regular baking stone.

Baked some panko-crusted tilapia last night for lunch today. Hopefully will be good.

When I get my lazy ass to the Asian market to buy some powdered pork, I'm gonna man up and try to make mapo doufu.

Carrot cake. I must make more. I like making Swiss rolls and plan to make a carrot cake one with cream cheese icing on the inside.
