I need help with a little megaproject. I call it the Clown Gun...

It's a simple concept and it works in theory and tests with an empty "barrel" - an enclosed tower (the inability of Clowns to destroy floor hatches above them is a WONDERFUL thing) with a carved pillar (NOT one made of walls) overhead. It fires, cleans out the entire tower, and as a finale it plugs the hole at the impact site (built walls impacting just deconstruct), thereby making the weapon re-usable for a second wave.

The problem is that while it works, it crashes the game when it's "fired" with Clowns inside it (test-firing went perfectly fine with nothing inside it).  Would anyone mind taking a look and see if there's any FPS-saving tricks i could implement to make it actually work without crashing the game?

Btw, this is the same fort i always build in, so some of you have seen it before.  This is just my newest stroke of insanity/genius.

The lever that "fires" it is at the level below F2, a little ways to the right in the top-right-hand corner of the dining hall.

It didn't crash my machine. What computer do you have, and what is your average fps?

One thing i can suggest, but it won't help with the current fort, is to use a more open design. Larger corridors around one central stairwell will reduce pathing options and give you more available cpu power for dropping stone on things.
Other than that, maybe try ordering all dwarfs to idle somehow? maybe just assign them all to a burrow in the dining room?

Did you just pull the lever as-is or did you go dig down into the Circus first?  It'll work fine for test-firing, but it'll crash if there are demons in it.

As for my PC, it's a self-built job.  6-core AMD 1090T processor, Nvidia GTX460 graphics card and 8GB of ram on a decent mobo. 

Also i do agree with the FPS design thing.  Knifemurders has been my sole fort for most of the last few months (and the one i learned to play DF with)  and i just keep adding new projects in available spaces.  I think it's going to die off soon though as i don't get any migrants and the Liason and dwarf caravan seem to have stopped coming altogether (human one still visits though).  There's only 65 Dwarves left in the fort too (at peak there was about 200+)

Okay, after removing the floors from the barrel, i managed to kill a few (about 6-8, i think) in a test-fire with it only pausing to think twice.  Now the question is;  Is it killing so many per-tick that's killing the game, or is it the complete event itself?  I'm hoping it's the former.  All that needs for a fix is a narrower barrel.  Anyone else had any experience with doing this?

Is there a clown made of flame? There is a bug I think were the game crashes if a flame demon gets a flames broken off it's body. Read a recent thread on it.

Hmmm, possibly.  I think I've seen an ember one in there once or twice at least.
