Yes, the magma-tunnel is 7/7 full from the hole in the magma-chamber all the way back to where I stopped digging. There are channels in each of the 4x4 rooms that I'd planned to build my magma-furnaces in and I can see the magma through the "open spaces". I just never got the "warm rock" warning and (so it appears) the game considers that I never "found" the magma.

Just for shits and giggles, I created a 2x2 zone around a volcano and embarked to there. Having cranked the dwarves up to mega-nutter speed via the raws it was a piece of cake to excavate to the volcano. And, sure enough, I got the "warm rock" warning and my miner backed off.

I can only assume it was some problem with the world-generation for that particular world. Either that or my dwarves discovered anti-magma!!

So wait, can you actually select to build "Magma forges" or is it only regular forges?

If you try to build a regular forge over a magma channel then you will get a little red cross or 3 because you cant build over a hole.

Now I've a huge tunnel for channeling the magma with trenches dug out on the z-level above so I can access the magma... and the furnace keeps telling me that I need magma under one of the boundary-tiles of the furnace before it'll work!!

Since I'm on a very tree-light map I guess this fort is scuppered and that the inevitable dwarven-doom came a little sooner than was expected... and from a totally unexpected direction</STRONG>

this sounds like a different bug to the OP and myself. if magma buildings are selectable then they are enabled. you are simply having problems placing them.

our problem is that there arent even magma buildings on the menu to select.

interesting that you didnt get a warm rock warning. im not sure what the OP experienced, but i got the warning myself.

Interesting - since I can build magma-forges but can't queue any production at them since that particular world doesn't seem to feature "warm rock" to trigger the "found magma" state that enables use of the forges.

So it seems to be an entirely different bug that is having a different effect but the same end result... no magma production. The 2x2 world I generated and tested with my super-speed dwarves did give me the "warm rock" warning - I've yet to see whether it affects the new 6x6 zone in a new world with non-warp-speed dwarves

Email?  Doubtful.  There's been a 10 MB limit on attachments for over a decade.  I think Gmail is the only one that's upped it.

Why are magma buildings not available from day one anyways? It's not like you can build them without magma, and I would have thought that having them available in the menu regardless would simplify the code and avoid bugs like this as well as user confusion.

It would also be consistent with the way other buildings work - after all, you can still select Forge from the menu even if you have no anvil, or Waterwheel even on a completely dry map.

You can build magma buildings anywhere, they just won't work. It's actually kinda flashy if you build them over an empty channel, then send the magma in later. Dwarven disco, anyone?

The email didn't come through.  The Dwarf Fortress File Depot has a place for bugged saves to be uploaded, or you could stick it on one of those file sites.

I have a fort in 40d that seems to be suffering from the same or a related issue.

The fort has a magma pipe, and I used to be able to build magma workshops.

Then there was an unfortunate incident involving a fisherdwarf and a fire imp. Additional casualties were incurred while attempting to retrieve the body, and before you know it, I had a child turn a potash maker into a boot, a captain of the guard with a 201-day prison sentence for murder, and a berserk mother killing her baby, only to be promptly dismembered by her obsidian-sword-wielding husband.

Everyone died.

Just to add insult to injury, a goblin ambush waltzed in just as the crazy stonecrafter was killing off the last, bedridden mayor, and claimed all the credit: "In the early winter of 125, The Wraith of Wetting defeated The Net of Feeding of The Escorted Bridge and destroyed Rootermachines.".

I reclaimed the fort, and now am not able to build magma workshops.

This is very unfortunate, because I tore down my only magma smelter to make room for a pump as part of my move-all-of-the-booze-and-beds-into-the-basement-and-then-flood-it-with-magma plan, when it became clear that the existing justice system was simply not keeping up with the tantrum spiral, especially since the metalcrafter and all of the masons were rioting, bringing the production of much-needed chains and coffins to a grinding halt.

Before-and-after saves here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=720
That includes the last seasonal save before the fort initially succumbed to fun, where magma workshops are buildable, and the first seasonal save on the reclaim, where they're not.
