[38c] Magma buildings not enabled
« on: March 04, 2008, 08:53:00 pm »

I've just finished digging out my magma forge area, only to discover I can't actually build them...

The world had a volcano so the magma pipe was already visible and I didn't need to discover it.
I started off with my 7 dwarfs to lay a bit of ground work, then abandoned and reclaimed so I had a slightly bigger population base to work with.
I can't remember if magma buildings were enabled for the original 7, but i know that they aren't enabled for the reclaim lot.

Oh and I've tried using magma enabler to get around it, but the latest version doesn't seem to work for 38c

[Edit]
I just thought I should add that I haven't "reveal.exe"ed this world either. I did initially and exported images of it, but then reverted to the first save after embarkation.
Oh, and an interesting feature of this site is that the chasm breaks to the surface, it isn't underground.
[/Edit]

[Edit2]
Further update: The volcano no longer seems to be filling up either... Maybe it went dormant? it definitely was filling up before reclaim though...
[/Edit2]

I have pretty much the same problem here, started a fortress with a surface magma vent, on which I was able to build forges etc but after a fire imp killed off a few of my dwarves I abandoned/reclaimed the site, dug myself a nice fortress and channeled in some magma, only to discover that the magma buildings weren't enabled.

I also haven't used reveal.exe or anything like that and I'm also running 38c

Also I don't know if its relevant but the first attempt at a reclaim party listed 14 dwarves, but I canceled that attempt before I even embarked to see if it was possible to build a new site on the same location. when I discovered it wasn't and again went to reclaim the site, only 7 dwarves were listed this time.

A final also is that the fire imps have totally disappeared from the world in my reclaimed fortress

Yeah... don't be so sure of that. I thought the goblins were gone from mine... they were just invibsible! ambush!

And yeah, I'm still going with this fortress, Ive turned the room that was going to be my smelting room into a dungeon, looks quite cool with all the magma channels and stuff...

And while building a magma channel the magma dislodged an iron floodgate? :S WTF?

Read up on magma; if you use a non-magmaproof rock for the floodgate's mechanism (basically, if you don't use bauxite or adamantine), then the mechanism will melt and set the floodgate loose.

I tought iron was magma proof.

Besides, it's just floating in the magma besides an old iron pick. Shouldn't it have melted?

Edit: I'll try to clarify it:

I used an iron floodgate and connected it to a lever before digging to the magma. I just noticed the floodgate is now a "floating" piece of furniture about 1 square east of where I placed it.

Right, and the floodgate didn't melt.  The mechanism made of something other than bauxite melted.

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Magma#Magma_vs._Built_Objects

Specifically,

quote:
Stone mechanisms attached to a construction will melt in magma unless made of bauxite, even if the construction itself is made of steel. In addition, if the mechanisms melt off of a floodgate, the floodgate will cease to be "constructed" and become an unplaced item again.v0.27.176.38a At this point, the magma will flow over it freely.
(Except you can also use adamantine mechanisms if you really feel like it)

Aaah crap. Maybe I was just lucky before. I thought the mechanisms where placed "INSIDE" the damned floodgate... Well, no matter, it's not like I risk a sword falling into it since I can't build magma forges

Use the magma buildings enabling tool while it's not fixed.

I've got the same problem as the OP -- my dwarves have dug to the magma (the location of which I knew since it shows up on the surface). I got no warm rock warning: in fact my especially created "never held a pick before peasant" just dug straight into the magma vent without hesitation and turned into dwarf-roast.

Now I've a huge tunnel for channeling the magma with trenches dug out on the z-level above so I can access the magma... and the furnace keeps telling me that I need magma under one of the boundary-tiles of the furnace before it'll work!!

Since I'm on a very tree-light map I guess this fort is scuppered and that the inevitable dwarven-doom came a little sooner than was expected... and from a totally unexpected direction

I'm facing almost the exact opposite, I detected the magma just fine, I just can't build anything :S Are you sure you're trying to build over a full channel? I think they need to be full
