No.24 is up.

The system in this comic is fictional, so I can bend it as needed, but also very similar to the DnD system so people can recognise it.

Quidditch really is a poorly thought out game- the bit with the Quaffle is really just to give the spectators something to watch.

Well given how essentially "old fashioned" the Wizard world is... It actually makes sense somewhat. Rules that are vague, unfair, and dangerous and where a game actually has no set time limit that can go on for days, weeks, and even months.

Though given how few wizards there are in the world its "league" being somewhat of a backwards niche sport makes sense (Though some people consider the "Official" Wizard numbers to be uncanonical)

In Quidditch Through the Ages, it's revealed that the Golden Snitch was actually a later addition to the game, started when someone released a rare bird during a match and offered 150 Galleons to whoever could catch it. I don't believe it explained why they thought it was a good idea to continue the tradition when money was no longer offered, however.

Tradition.

For example why was it considered poor form to wear face masks if you were a Goalie in Hockey?

We are talking about a game where you could EASILY fall to your death that is played by children where in fact one of the possitions ENTIRE goals is to knock you off AND that knocking you off your broom is part of the game.

Frankly even though fatalities havn't happened as far as the books can tell. They havn't given much reason as to why there wouldn't be.

Better yet they HAVE spells that could make the game safe.

I like the nerd-theory that the Snitch was added because the first Seeker was the Kings idiot son who wanted to play but couldn't understand any of the positions. "Go catch the shiny thing, boy!"

The question is: Have they gotten rid of the "idiot as seeker" tradition yet?

I can imagine it being some school-wide joke: Everyone just laughs behind clueless Potter's back and he never finds out.

Ever.

Ehh I've heard of sports in real life that were essentially catching something (For example catching cheese rolling down a hill or catching a chicken (a real sport) or hare) they weren't "Idiot sports" and making a possition for his "son" to play when there was genuin cash involved would be bad form.

Honestly the Snitch and the Catcher would be to me something that would eventually be removed from the sport.

Well, why would it necessarily be a cash prize? I never heard anything about that beyond the 150 galleons for catching a fly, and that's a competing idea, I never said they were put together.

Also, in those games, catching it -is the whole point-. In Quidditch, it seems tacked on and with a very disproportionate weighting in points.

Because it is a throw back to very old real life games with very unbalanced rules.

For example in the early days of Hockey team sizes were infinite and the games kept going until one side wins.

Also catching the Snitch isn't worth that much... given that games have been able to last for hours, days, weeks, and months (Heck in the original game it wouldn't have been inconcievable for the bird to never be caught) the 150 points (which is essentially a 15 point lead) isn't that large relative to how much the point totals could diverge.

To me the stupid tacked on rule is that the winners are the ones with the most points at the end of a season. Meaning that the ENTIRE season could have been decided by a single almost endless match against two teams who could even be the worst teams in the league. That alone tells you that this is not a tried, tested, and true sport like out modern sports but a sport that today we would consider a farce like many sports available at the turn of the century.

Proof in Book 4 - Bulgaria gets the Snitch but Ireland wins anyway.

You guys should go read "Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality". Damn good fanfic.
