Oh right! It's been a looong time since I've read book 1. Anyway, malfoy only liked him because he was famous/ "would do well in slytherin"

And there's that whole dynamic of "Longbottom could have been the real hero" that was present in the books.

Plus don't forget that as far as dungeons and dragons goes... NO ONE is truely a villain unless they oppose the PCs.

Lovin it.  I really enjoy angsty roleplaying Dan juxtaposed to the quest-happy min-maxing Emily.  And clueless Robin...

Everybody always hating on hufflepuff.  If being all mopey was enough to get you into Hufflepuff, how come Neville wasn't a Hufflepuff?

There are a few theories

1) A character's main or secret character traits puts them in the house
2) The hat sometimes places people so that no house has too little of a specific character trait (Often called the "Why Hermoine wasn't in Ravenclaw" Claus)

It could just be that Neville was just a leader waiting to be born and that trait was greater then the Hufflepuff's trait of overpowering friendship (I THINK that is their trait).

If there is two flaws in the books it is
1) The lack of description of Hufflepuff's traits of virtue
2) The overdemonisation of Slitherine in the later books.

I never found Hufflepuff virtues hard to understand.  They are loyal and they are diligent.  In my mind, taken together those are probably the most useful combination of traits you can have to get ahead.  Hufflepuffs would naturally congregate with other Hufflepuffs, who they would find congenial, and by virtue of outworking the other three houses combined they would be running the wizarding world within a couple of generations.

Behind nearly every real world successful organization, you will find Hufflepuffs holding the glue of society together.  Yes you could start Google or Microsoft with nothing but Ravenclaws.  But try looking at the Federal Reserve or General Electric sometime and you'll see that organizations quickly fall apart without Hufflepuffs in places of power.  If you run without Hufflepuffs for too long, you end up with Enron or Lehman Brothers.

The only issue is that the Hufflepuff virtues tend to be so engraved in the other houses it becomes odd.

They never show the Hufflepuffs being "better" then any other class at anything. HECK by all means they show less "friendship and hardworking" then all four.

Slitherine's virtues arn't hard to understand either. The vast majority of point and click characters would be Slitherine.

I am aware that in essence the Hufflepuffs are the glue that holds society together. A Griffondore Leader would be inspiring and loyal, a Slitherine Leader would be cunning and creative, a Ravenclaw leader would be wise and thinking, and a Hufflepuff Leader would be uniting and diligent.

I just wish they weren't so out of focus that it honestly makes you feel like the Hufflepuffs are just the class everyone who doesn't deserve to go in any of the other ones go to.
