That reminds me of how I decided to GM:

1. Make a wonderfully detailed campaign for your players.
2. Give players hints and clues to get them thinking about what's going on.
3. Watch in frustration as players run off and focus all their attention on something completely different.
4. Just throw stuff at the players. Figure out what it means later.

The downside is that things can get pretty ridiculous. The upside is that even you don't know what the next plot twist will be!
