Generally, you don't talk about your familiar because they have crap stats and the GM/RNG God is liable to gib them at any moment. After all, you lose experience if your familiar dies!

I like how in 4th edition, they pretty much made this a standard feature by having them be in your dimensional immune-to-damage cloak unless you specifically called them out.

When they finally got around to adding them at all, that is.

I'd rather familiars be creatures that reappear after a few days if their corporeal bodies get destroyed, and can only die in fairly specific circumstances. They might actually get used, then.

We already have (had? I think 4e ones are mostly daily powers) summoned creatures for expendable meatshield/distraction/infiltration duty, though.

But yes, immortality would make them used more often, certainly, if not with any more dignity.

Hermione: "Ron what happened to your face it is all fuzzy?"
Ron: "Ohh no! HELP ME!"
Harry: "It is only for one frame, I am sure it will be better soon"

You've got to wonder what kind of demented publisher would make a book that attacks their customers if they don't open it properly.
The same one that made an invisible book, presumably.

Though I hear Harry went on to become, like, the leader of the police or something after doing battle with the most powerful dark wizard of all time and gaining worldwide fame, so that's insane in my book already.
Aurors, IIRC. They're more like navy SEALS, except domestic.
Wizard paramilitary forces, for taking out exceptionally dangerous wizards. Not named-Death-Eater-level, mind, but still.
...Okay, yeah it's a step down, but there's not enough Dark Lords for Harry to keep fighting them and he has to put food on the table somehow...and magic isn't directly an option there.

All I hear here is "there are none worthy to oppose you."

Ah yes, the classic noble adventuring party hard at work considering their options.

...though this group has a bit more respect for the consequences of being caught than I'm accustomed to, actually.

The trick is to determine how much the DM has planned for a particular NPC. The quicker he answers your questions about the vagabond in the corner, the more likely you will be insta-gibbed if you harm the DM's new plot device. Inversely, if he hesitates before answering any specific questions, chances are you can loot, maim and pillage to your heart's content with comparatively negligible consequences.

You sound... experienced. Experienced and wise.

In maiming target selection.

I remember one game where the PCs disarmed an entire group of armed guards by holding the captain at knifepoint.

The guards disarmed but little did the PCs know that the captain had everything well in hand (They even boasted to people that the "DM godmoded them") even after he unloaded magical flying coins, cloaks, and had two hidden magic flying bracers to combat them with.

I bet the PCs still think I took it easy on them because they picked the wrong choice... Far be it, it was so easy for them because that general wanted to beat the snot out of them unassisted.
