There really ought to be a lot of Slytherin heirs kicking around. If he gets, say, two kids, and every kid gets two kids, and there are, say, 25 years between every generation, in generation 40 (after 1,000 years) there are 34,359,738,368 heirs of Slytherin. Assuming there's no inbreeding.

And no death.

Which may occur after 1,000 years.

Yeeeaaah. Everyone realizes that's more than the population of the world, right?

This has reminded me that there don't appear to be any immortal wizards in Harry Potter. They're doing it wrong. :P

Still not familiar with that one. Also know Voldemort's got something going on, but I'm not sure if that does anything about aging or is purely to keep him from being stabbed.

Horcruxes seal a piece of his soul away and technically stop him from dying.

Yeah, he's basically a Lich. There was that guy who created the Philosopher's Stone, though- I forget why he died, I think he was bored/depressed or something.

Because the wizarding world stagnated. I really wish Dumbles-

Wait.

What says Dumbledore didn't hide the Philosophers stone in a bag in a sewer somewhere and just tell everyone he smashed it? I mean who's going to go "Dumbledore you liar, show me the fragments"? OOH MAYBE HE KEPT THE MEMORY IN THE PENSIVE!

The guy who made the Philosopher's Stone died of old age when he and Dumbledore agreed to destroy the thing. It's kind of funny imagining a crazy scientist walking up to the Dean of Harvard and saying, "Hey, look, I invented immortality, should we destroy this or something?" but hey.

Voldemort pretty much stayed alive through consumption of unicorn blood. The horcruxes only prevented early death - Death from aging was still a possibility. After the first book, though, how he didn't die from aging was kind of hand waved. The reason he was so obsessed about the Deathly Hallows was because they would prevent death from aging, as well.

I have no clue why I remember all this.

Well, they created a new whole body for him. So assumedly that body was healthy enough to withstand a few years of aging. It's not like Voldemort would be all that old anyway. Certainly a few decades younger than Dumbledore.

I'm always kind of peeved at people in fantasy and sci-fi going "We invented immortality in a way that is not defined as only working for one person! We must destroy it or else it'll get into the wrong hands!"

Noooo, you give it to -everyone- so no one person gets a huge power-hold over everyone from their huge lifespan.

I think that the stone only made enough immortality juice for one person.

Then make a second stone? You're immortal.

Come on, it's simple! Every person who gets a stone has to produce two stones. Before too long, everyone has a stone AND there's a surplus in case someone loses their stone.

The Philosopher's stone isn't exactly easy to make. It may even require materials that are incredibly difficult to get or fabricate.

It's kind of like saying that all we have to do to populate the Moon is give everyone their own lander. Easy to say....very difficult and expensive to do in practice (even ignoring the issues around an actual moon colony).
