I, too, was frequently disappointed by my skill choices when they never came up.

However, Profession (Lawyer) turned out to be unusually helpful.

That's my main gripe with D20 rulesets. It's hard enough getting the skills you need that the "useless" skills never get any love. Yeah, some of them can earn you money and I'm sure Knowledge (Abyssal Plane) will be useful at least once in a character's lifetime, but there should really be a distinction between useful skills and flavor skills, if they can't be combined outright in the first place.

It is to the extent that usually the strategy in these situations is to start off with the important skills, then to stop putting points in them as soon as they stop being important (Like Climb).

But that is why D20 is on the "Game over Roleplaying" side of the spectrum of pen and paper RPGs (Which isn't a "Bad" side. MechWarrior for example is almost 100% game over roleplay and it is a great game)
