I take a few minutes to collect myself after Carrot leaves before going to check through Nicolta's belongings. I pull out my Sequel and begin to make notes on what I find.
Khenal's Sequel, Chapter 2
Notes on what Nicolta Testla had when he was discovered in the caverns.
Several pieces of jewelry, likely of his own make. Slightly worn, nothing really distinguishing apart from the quality.
Tool belt, empty. Looks stiffened from water damage. Also had several small tears in the leather. Had a bit of paper crammed in one of the pockets, but totally destroyed by water.
It looks like he fell into the cavern river not long after doing some work. He's a dedicated pony, but I doubt he'd purposely go for a swim with his tools. Looks like he had a rough ride down the river, likely ending in the cavern lake. The paper might have been a clue if it weren't for the water damage. As it is now, it's just trash. His tools missing is also a bit concerning, and I doubt anypony would be able to find any of them in the river or cavern lake.
Nothing to take him of the suspect list, apart from the fact that he knows how I investigate. I doubt he was involved in making the trap, but I'll have to take a look at it before I can really say anything.
I nod to myself before closing my book and turning to the guard in the room and pointing to the unconscious witness with a wing.
"Make sure he's alright and take his statement when he's ready to give it. I'm headed to Charity's personal chambers to check the trap and take it apart for evidence."
As I leave the hospital, I notice the two missing guards are back. I scowl before addressing them.
"You two will be doing cavern patrol for the next month. When I say to guard the hospital, I mean guard the hospital! You two know better than to shirk your duties like that."
