Khenal notices something out of the corner of his eye. A glimpse of copper feathers, a flash of multicolored mane. He feels a slight tug on the chain in his jaws.

Commander Starkey stands before him. His eyes are bloodshot, his mane is dishevelled - he has obviously been bitterly weeping. Yet now he stands, grinning back at Khenal, teeth clenched around the ethereal chain.

I nod at Carrot, invigorated by his confidence in me.  I get off his back and stand on my own hooves.

I then notice Starkey standing beside me, helping take up the slack on the chain.

"I told you already, Schmoe, I don't want anypony to die.  Now get out of her!"

Starkey gives the chain another hard tug, grunting from the strain. His steel barding has protected all but his legs and wings from the flames, but in the intense heat is rapidly turning the suit into a pressure cooker. Even he can only last so long in here. He glances up at Khenal, and manages to grunt around the chain.

"Khernalh. Hyough chnow mingh maghich?"
