Estoc gives him a confused expression before recalling that few ponies knew of Venture's talent.  "Venture... she has a special talent for speaking with spirits of the dead.  She can show us to her."

Falcata nods.  "Yes... we've already spoken to Friesden and Khenal.  I... I should have spoken to Kris before now... but I was scared to.  I didn't know what I'd tell her... or... or if she'd want to join me..."

Starkey turns to Otik.

"This... is this true?"

"Aye, hun. It is."

She hangs her head.

"I... I wos afraid ye'd want t'join us too. I'm so sorry."

Falcata and Estoc exchange one more glance.  "She really needs us now though... I have to talk to her... let's go see if Venture is in the hospital," Falcata says.

*******

Kris wasn't sure why Venture had called for her to come to the hospital.  She'd checked out just fine the day before.  Maybe it was just to check on her hoof.  It wasn't any worse at least...

As she enters the hospital, she finds Venture standing with Friesden.
"Um, you wanted to see me?"

"Yes, Kris, there's somepony who wants to talk to you.  Just sit tight for a moment."  Her horn glows briefly, and Kris feels her perception of the world shift in a way that was impossible to explain.  She blinks a few times... unwilling to believe what she was seeing.  "V-Venture... what... what is this?"  She takes a step backward, mouth hanging open and astonishment on her face.

Falcata steps forward, giving her a sad smile.
"Kris... it's us.  We wanted to talk to you..."  She steps forward and moves to hug her.

"M-mom...?" Kris responds in disbelief.

"Mum? Falcata? Dad?"

Friesden rushes forward to her dad and embraces him in a hug. "Dad! I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, I should have been there, I could have helped, I could have saved you, I'm so sorry! Please, tell me you forgive me, please? I know I don't deserve it, but please, please, forgive me!"

Starkey holds Friesden tight.

"Oh Friesden, I'm so sorry! If I'd only been fast enough, or strong enough...I never wanted to leave you, Friesden."

Kris is still dumbstruck.  What on the Sisters' earth was happening here?  Had she lost her mind completely?  Maybe that scourge blow to her head had done more damage than she thought... but it felt so real...  "Mom... mom... how... how is this possible?"

Falcata clutches her tightly and is silent for some time.  "It's just like I told you, honey... I was here the whole time, watching you.  And I found out somepony else was here too..."  She makes a small motion to Estoc.  "Do you remember him?"

Kris blinks in renewed disbelief.  Was it... could it be...?  "D... dad?"

"That's right," he says, stepping over and joining in the hug.  "I've been with the two of you the whole time."

Kris doesn't know what to say or do.  She just holds the embrace and begins sobbing.  Finally, she manages to say, "Oh, mom... I've missed you so much... so, so much..."

"I know honey... I know..."  She strokes Kris' mane.  "I've missed you too..."

"As have I," Estoc adds.  "I'm so proud of you Kris... you've grown up so much..."

Kris doesn't know how to respond to that.  She felt like such a failure... and she still wasn't sure she was completely sane.  How did Venture factor into this?  What was going on?  They... they were still dead, right?  Was this their... souls?  For the moment, she really didn't care.  She was with her mom... and her dad again.  Her real dad... she makes a small noise as she buries herself deeper into their grip.

**Meanwhile**

I look up from my desk, glad to have any distraction from the paperwork that I thought I had escaped so long ago.

"Hello Willow, how are you doing?"

I notice the stack of papers she has and my pupils shrink, fearing she has even more paperwork for me.

"What's... what's that?"

A wide smile streaks across her face.

"This, Cap, Is a' 'nalysis of our battle with tha' Diomidians. It's got every'ing, Includin' a few strategies for next time."

She hands the report over eagerly

"ya see, a brave soldier fights tha' enemy. A smart soldier learns tha' enemy."

I sigh a bit in relief as she explains it's not more boring paperwork.  Looking through it, it becomes obvious that there's more information than could be gleaned from a single battle.  The counter strategies are particularly interesting.  They'd probably need a little cleaning up to be used, but the Militia could certainly use them.

"I agree, Willow.  Knowledge is power.  This information is amazing, I'll be sure to pass this along to the Militia.  How did you get this information, though?  Have you been scouting into the jungle?"

her eyes flick to the left, she tried to stifle her smile

"Oh, let's jus' say our Diomidian captive took a real nasty tumble down some steps on the way to the dungeons. barely hangin' by a thread, you might want ta' put em out of 'is misery."
