Kris recoils at the exclamation.  Lilac couldn't have seen her father.  But what did she see?

"Wait... I... but... where did you see him?  When?"

"In the hospital?  What did he do?"

Kris tries to picture seeing her father again and wonders what it would feel like.  She might freeze up too...

Starkey quietly enters the barracks. He approaches the small triptych, opening it wide and pulling out a small drawer. From within, he produces a few small candles and a stick of incense. He lights each with a small flint and steel, and sits in quiet contemplation.

Starkey gives her an insincere smile.

"Fine, I'm... fine."

He turns back to the carving of Luna.

"How are you?"

"Are you sure? I saw Khenal in the hall earlier. I should think he'd be happy to hear you were awake, but... he was... inconsolable. Did something happen?"

"Well..I don't," her voice cracks for a bit, then she begins again.

"I...I don't think he loves me anymore."

"W-What? Friesden, where would you ever get a... a ridiculous idea like that? He adores you! If you could have only seen the pain he was in, seeing you enthralled by that daemon..."

"Then...then.." She chokes up for a second. "Why...why didn't he let me comfort him when he was sad?" She starts to cry again. "He,  he, he doesn't want me near him! And I can't bear to be apart!"

Starkey turns away from his prayers, kneeling down to nuzzle Friesden.

"Hey now, don't cry... What happened that made him sad?"

"Me!" she bawls out. "I was just trying to let him know how much I loved him and he turned away and left! I, I, I, I just wish I knew why!"

Starkey puts out the candles, closing up the small shrine. He lays down next to Friesden.

"It has to be something more than that. Please... tell me what happened, exactly."
