I notice a flurry of activity as I get closer to the hospital.  Flagging down a nearby pony I asked, "What happened?"
The pony stared at me for a few seconds before responding, "Someone tried to assassinate Charity!  She's in the hospital now and she's going to die!  People are saying it was the Diomedians and their ambush was a ruse to-"
I cut her off before she could go any further, I knew a budding rumor when I heard it.  The part about Charity being hurt was probably true though.  Probably the only part that was true.
We should go in there...  To see if our new leader is okay of course.
"Shut it Negs," I muttered under my breath, low enough that no one would have been able to hear me.
I'm just saying we could make a good impression.  Always a good idea to get an in with the powers that be in case things go south again.
"That's what ended up getting us chased out of the last one," I sighed.  "But you're right.  Anyways, If I can explain away your eating habits we might be able to help out."
You'll want me to feed openly?
"Only if I can come up with a good explanation.  Otherwise it's back to the usual."  Putting on my best concerned but willing to help face I made my way into the hospital.

"Who....who are you? I'm doctor Bubbles. Doesn't matter...."
This is all said with a ring of depression
"Help me with Charity. Wash the wound there while I dress it."

[Rentorian]

"Can do."
I start washing the wound, noticing Charity shudder as I touch it.
"There's something else I can do.  It will... lessen the pain."

I was a little surprised to go to sleep, wake up, go to work, and come back to several new pages of stuff.  Looks plenty fun though.

Pretty much any negative emotions and sensations.  It can leave a person calmer, more relaxed.  But it can also take away the rush you get from those feelings.  If that's all that's keeping her alive it'll harm her, if not it will at least make her more comfortable."
Keep an eye on that Khenal.  Won't like me, won't like us.  Might have to run again.  I really don't want to run on an empty stomach Granite.
"I know that, now shut up and let me keep talking," I muttered under my breath.
Can I at least taste the one over there?  She smells delicious.
"No," I whispered sharply.  "No eating right now."

[Khenal]

I give this unfamiliar pony a questioning look, and watch carefully as he does whatever it is he's going to do.

[Rentorian]

"Looks like we have the go ahead," I whispered.  "Try to focus on the pain and doubt."
I know what I'm doing.
I've never known what a direct feeding looks like from someone else's perspective.  I know most people can't see the entire thing but they can always tell something is going on.  I took a deep breath and focused, letting Negs move forward in my mind.  Charity's body was suddenly a multicolored cocoon of light.  With a cry of delight Negs reached out and pulled, slowly at first and then faster and faster as bloody reds, deep blacks, sickly greens, and half a dozen other colors swept up into me.  I shuddered as I felt the same euphoric feeling he felt whenever he fed deeply and staggered to the side, closing the gate Negs had used.  When I looked at Charity again she as breathing deeply and softly, as though she had simply decided to go to sleep for the night.

[Dsarker]

"Khenal, what's happening? I can feel a new presence out there."

[DVNO]

 

"Ughugm," Couth clears his throat - he knows convincing Nicolta that he's the hero in all of this is going to be a long shot but he's no barbarian! he has to try!

"listen, Nicolta, I'm just going be upfront. I may forged those trap orders."

"you WHAT-"

"-and I might have just killed the countess"

"I DON- YOU -HOW - WHA?"

Nicolta can't believe what's he's hearing! this isn't the brewer he knows! who is this pony?

 "yeah, it's just been one of those days..." Couth said with a sheepish honesty.

 "YOU MONSTER!" he cries!
 
Couth winces

 "YOU MADMARE' he sobs!

Couth winces again

 "YOU HONORLESS KINIVING CHURL!"

Couth painfully presses his hooves into Nicolta's

"I. am not. the. bad guy." Couth enunciates. 
 
"look, I don't want to hurt you, I don't have to. All I need is that note. then this can all blow over."

Nicolta Baulks at even the notion of placating, but her grip IS getting weaker by the second...


 

[Khenal]

'I don't know, but no earth pony should be able to do that.  Charity looks more relaxed now, at least.  I think this new pony and I need to talk.'

[Dsarker]

"What did he or she do?"

[Rentorian]

Something isn't right...
"What do you mean?  You haven't fed like that in years.  I can't remember the last time I felt this good and I'm sure you can't either."  I looked around the hospital to disguise my checking to see if anyone was paying attention to my whispering.
Not the feeding.  That was glorious there's something else that's wrong.  Can't you hear it?  There's a... buzzing in the air.
"I don't hear anything..."  I couldn't think of anything that would set Negs off like that, but if he said something was off it was best to leave the room.  Immediately.
"I... think I need to sit down for a while.  That was harder than I expected.  If you need me I'll be in the dining hall."
Hoping my admittedly flimsy excuse would hold up I headed towards the door.

[Khenal]

'He...took her pain, and seemed to enjoy it.  He didn't bask in the pain, or amplify it, or anything like what I think a daemon might do.  He just removed it.'

I get up to follow this pony out, confident that both Charity and Carrot are in good hooves.

"Let me get you a drink, mysterious new pony.  I'm Khenal, what's your name?"

[Rentorian]

"Names Granite, nice to meet you."
Damn it!  I was hoping I could get away without being followed.
"I suppose I could use a drink now that you mention it."
Might as well get something out of this.
I choose a seat in one of the less crowded sections of the dining hall and sit down, before Khenal can get the drinks I decide I just might as well ask and get it over with.
"What do you really want?  That look in your eye says you want a lot more than to get me a drink."
