Dreadlocks!!!!!!11
« on: September 13, 2011, 08:42:07 pm »

As a lazy man, I have often been irritated by the necessity of brushing my hair every frickin morning.

Therefore, I am about to attempt to dread myself.  Anyone got a tip or five?

Dreds suits some people more than it does to others.
My suggestion is to ask people you know if they think you should go with it.
Then again, even if they don't think it suits you, you do what YOU think would be best.

I have no tips, but a question. How does one 'dread'? Do you just not wash your hair for a long time?

If you're that lazy, why not just cut your hair short enough that combing it is no longer an issue?  Personally, I think short hair looks better than dreads on most people.  Sorry, I don't have useful advice for what you asked for.  I suggest my alternative solution to the greater problem.

Do shower, with a bag over your hair. That reason alone to me means you should only get dreads if you're really about dreads. Because they take actual work to form and maintain. More work in the end than just having long hair.

All but one person's reply can be summed up as "Hell yes" so it's all good there :)

There are quite a few different methods, ranging from neglect (simply not brushing your hair for a few years) to back combing, to perming.  I'm trying to do things mainly naturally, but help them along a little.  The front few have been back combed already and I'm just rub a wooly hat over my hair from time to time to encourage knotting and try to shape them by rolling between my palms.

You still wash them, no matter which method you choose.  Dirty hair contains residues and oils which slow down the dreading process.

xD

I've shaved my hair twice and felt like I was in disguise both times :p

I've always been more of a bath person, so there shouldn't be any problems there :)

I'll post a few pics up of the progress when I get round to buying a new USB lead for my camera.

From what I understand Dread Locks present other problems and issues that ordinary hair styles do not.

For example they are so unhygenic that some buisness will not allow their workers to even have Dreadlocks. As well you cannot get them wet to my knowledge (water on weave).

Also Dreadlocks that start to fall appart look horrible and no one will tell you.

"That reason alone to me means you should only get dreads if you're really about dreads"

Yeah this person is exactly right. Nothing is really wrong with Dreads but you have to REALLY want them and be willing to work for them.

They arn't really a way out of anything.

Unhygienic?

Dreads are generally more hygienic than regular hair if looked after well.  Lack of residue from shampoos and less damage from constant combing/straightening etc can actually result in far healthier hair.  The unhygienic image only really comes from the silly people who cover them in wax (which can lead to trapped dirt or even mould :o)

I am not denying it. Though remember we are talking about someone who wants Dreads because they are "low maintenance".

There are two kinds of dreads.

There are the dreads black people tend to get. They're clean, well cared for, and pretty awesome. Their hair is generally course and dry.

Then there's the dreads everyone else has to do, where they let their hair get scummy and oily because it's too fine otherwise. Or they add wax and other stuff to speed up the process.

I've seen people that don't have the hair for dreads have nice looking clean dreads. But they have to work at it.

The people that think they can just tie off their long hair in 8 places and not wash it ever again are the ones that end up looking like hippies. And they're the ones that have hygiene problems. Oil is oil. It goes rank after time, and rank stuff attracts unwanted attention. Add on a heap of dead skin cells from not washing your scalp, and yeah. Dreads can be pretty damn nasty.

Umm, who said anything about not washing them?

Bicarb of soda dissolved in water takes care of pretty much anything.  Essential oils give them a nice smell :)

And a note from someone in the know... dreads make your hair more flame resistant, which is very useful if you happen to be a fire dancing hippie.
