And also insecurity, angst, and addiction. Same as for everyone.

I'll also add that in a world where it's becoming harder and harder to get

a. abortions
b. basic birth control

pregnancies are often going to be more and more stressful, and more frequently unwanted.

Hmmm. I've got no idea. Why would people willingly ingest a poison that damages your brain? That lowers your judgement?
Stupidity and occasionally the wilful destruction of braincells because they cannot cope with life.

How is it getting harder to get basic birth control? Can you not just buy condoms? Or is this the medicine you're referring to?

(This is not something I really concern myself with so I would love to know)

Is this happening worldwide?  I mean, there was a recent possibly slightly anti-choice suggested amendment to abortion law in the UK (where this case happened) but it was completely beaten in parliament.

That, and it's popular in many areas to ignore that condoms exist in sex education. Even if they're available, it doesn't help if you don't know about them, or have been taught that they are unreliable because only abstinence is guaranteed to be successful (although, really, if anybody had read the Bible, they'd know there's a very small margin of error on that statistic and it's dishonest to claim otherwise >______>).

It's not universal, it's more that anywhere it does happen is one place too many, in my mind.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

What causes men to drink?

Women.

Presumably,

a. Better awareness, so that women know alcohol would hurt their baby
b. Alleviating whatever drives women to drink
What do you...believe is causing them to drink?

Men.

Actually, under normal circumstances you have to have at least two drinks a day for alcohol to damage your health. At one drink per day alcohol can actually slightly improve your health (provided that you don't take pills with it) (and provided that its actually one drink a day, rather than a cycle between binge drinking and abstinance that merely averages out to one drink per day).

Personally I find it much more baffling that people smoke, that people would ingest a poison that doesn't appear to do anything at all until years later you get cancer.

I don't smoke cigarettes but I tried tobacco for about a month to see what my Dad saw in it. It has very strong effects upon how you feel. I found myself feeling a bit of sick energy if that makes sense when I smoked tobacco. It was pleasant with a bit of euphoria for about a maximum of ten seconds, at which point to continue the pleasant 'rush' sensation you would have to take another puff of smoke. There was also a gradually diminishing 'buzz' that lasted quite a bit longer and seemed to make me a slight bit more irritable and served to continually remind me that I might have been smoking at that particular time.

If the process was not continued immediately once began there was indeed a certain almost curious willingness to start another bowl of tobacco, at which point it began again. Towards the end of the month my reflex when I first sat in my chair was to look around for the tobacco pipe. Luckily I had planned to stop and had a self limited supply.

In other words, you aren't missing anything. I tried it as a non-smoker so you didn't have to. Tobacco sucks. Except for you poor bastards who crave it. I and everyone around you hope you quit soon and that your health is better for having finally done it. (good job if you did! Everyone is proud of you and most importantly you should be proud of yourself.)

Jeez, could you be more patronising? Seriously, I would quit, except this is what non-smoking does to you  ;)

Smokers, despite what nonsmokers may think, are very well aware of the damage it does. Unfortunately most of the fun things in life are bad for you. Since we're all only going to be around for a very short time anyway, why not enjoy it?

You'd be surprised.

In fact reading your post I can't help but wonder if you're really aware of the myriad ways in which it screws you up.

Yeah, it's not like they have big warning signs and labels or horrifying pictures of rotten organs on the packs to tell people what smoking does to them.

Furthermore, people does not need to know "all the myriad of ways it screws them up" to be aware it is bad for their health and will lead to a premature death.

For the most part they're not aware of it, and/or think the health damage is far milder than it really is.
