Dwarf fortress won't start

No error, just a blank command prompt when i run dwarfort.exe.
I'm running vista if that helps at all? I've tried disabling all my firewalls,anti-spyware and antivirus software and still nada.

Sounds like a driver problem, similar to "all my ASCII are dots!"

I've had a similar issue on a totally different system; probably unrelated, but may help. My problem was when running DF under Linux from a terminal, the current directory had to be the dwarf fortress directory
(i.e.,
~/$ df/Dwarfort.exe
didn't work but
~/df/$ ./Dwarfort.exe
did)
or it would look for neccesary files in the (incorrect) current directory and fail almost silently.

As I said, probably unrelated, but may help. If this was totally incomprehensible, my apologies. =)

*Ahem* I hate to derail this thread but would you kindly tell me what driver causes this for a poor soul who had his hard drive fried? (I cant find it in the forum search anywhere  :( )

I'm a fellow DF on Vister player...

Did you mess with the ini.txt settings regarding windowed/full screen fontsize?

That has made my screen black for DF.

That would entirely depend on your video card.

Do you hear any sound when you run it?  If it's really a video driver issue, I'd expect that you *probably* still get sound, just about as soon as you start the game.  It's possible that REALLY hosed drivers would just lock up the game though.

A completely black prompt sounds to me like you told it to use a tileset but either typed it wrong or didn't convert one from the internet to bitmap. The driver issue usually still shows a few squares here and there. Alternatively, maybe even the default tilesets are missing somehow. Double-check your init.txt and data/art/ folder.
