You tell the Ogre to start finding ore carts, while you go inside to warn off the men. When you are sure that the Ogre is out of hearing range, you head inside to the "trap".

You enter the large doors, and don't see any sign of your ambush. No nets, no awaiting dwarves with picks. These cowardly dwarves have abandoned their post! You roar in rage as you start briskly walking through the hall, looking for any of the dwarves

Finally you hear a rustling on one of the ceiling support girders. One of the mechanics has positioned himself on a catwalk, watching with a pair of binoculars. He curses under his breath and runs back towards the main lobby. The realization sinks in that if you wouldn't have made a deal with the Ogre, you would have been felled here today.

You stomp back out into the ore yard, and call to Auroch.

"The dwarves manning this hall are a bunch of lazy curs and have abandoned their post. You have undoubtedly seen the arrival of the elves. Now, they are here for steel, and we cannot provide steel without workers. I need your help in persuading them to accept an extension on their contract.

The Ogre laughs with a deeply bellowing laugh that echos back from within the production hall, and responds :

"You have many problems to solve, Urist. But let us go negotiate, for I have no desire to be felled by the tree fondlers."

You walk into the lobby with Auroch in tow, and see the secretary, the guard, and two elves in extremely expensive suits sitting at a bench. The elves eyes widen as the Ogre steps through the doorway by practically crawling. They immediately stand up, and look like they are about to bolt to the door. With one smooth motion you give them a "sit down" gesture and then pull their letter out from your jacket pocket. They sit down, and before able to collect themselves, you say :

"I am the foreman of this facility. I understand we have not filled an order, and that you are going to challenge us to combat at the end of this day if we do not provide the steel you requested. Now, since you are going that far, then we have the right to challenge you to combat now. I would dare say , we have the advantage. The Ogre behind me is the foreman of the smelting hall."

The elves don't respond, they really were not prepared for this.

"I propose to you a counter offer. We will deliver the goods, and your artisans will have the materials they require. I will even take 50% off the original price. But it will take two days time. If you accept, walk out that door right now, and deliver the message to your superiors. If you do not, then stand up and say you are prepared to fight"

The elves stand up from the bench, and start walking out the door, and mumble something about "two days".

You tell the guard,

"All men in production hall A are officially fired. If they will not leave, then I will make them leave. You will escort each one off, and if you need help, then Auroch will help you."

You turn to the secretary and say,
"I need all their firing papers typed up and ready within an hour. I will be signing them all personally. If the HR manager isn't present, then he or she will be fired also."

"I am headed to my office. I need to make some plans while the papers are being typed up. Auroch, will you assist our guard with his duties?"

The secretary directs you to the elevator behind her. "Your office is the top floor. Push six."

You have some things to think about. How are you going to get the production hall running? Did you do the right thing, by firing all the workers?

What are your next actions?

Mass Firings for anyone unwilling to work. Requisition new personnel if possible but if we can't we'll just have to make do.

Introduce the workers to the new Foreman of the Smelting Hall. Give them a chance to prove they're willing to work before firing their lazy asses.

Bring that idler count down!

Agreed.  Introduce the new foreman, and emphasize that he is also part of the HOUR staff.  Round up anyone who holds rank over anyone else.  We need a stern talk about what leadership really means.

As the elevator doors close, you remember. It is a mistake to fire everyone! You press the ground floor key and as soon as the elevator door opens you scream "STOPPPPPPPPPPP!", your dwarvenly voice echoing throughout the halls.

A few dwarves are standing around the lobby, in the first group that was being escorted out. You tell the secretary to stop typing the firing slips.

"You, Dwarves. Do you want to keep your jobs? Guard, get all of Production Hall B's dwarves together. I want to meet them by Furnace #1.  Secretary, I want everyone who is in management - and I mean everyone - in the board room in an hour. We are going to have a serious discussion about how things are going to work, from now on."

There are only about a half dozen Dwarves remaining. Apparently, some have left because they refuse to work for an Ogre. Either way, you have some people. So, you're going to try once more for an inspiring talk, as you have 20 tons of steel to get out the door.

"Dwarven brothers... No, you are not brothers. For your actions, you are barely tolerable. For the rest of those that have left, if they show up again, I will throw a piece of gabbro at them myself. I tell you this. You will get to work, and get 20 tons of ore loaded in one of the furnaces today, or I will administer the beatings myself. "

"Auroch. Help them get these furnaces loaded. Do you know the alloy required for Dwarven cannon steel?"

"Aye. A maraging steel. We should be able to produce an adequate grade with what we have. So be it!

You take a quick count. You have 3 haulers, 2 mechanics, and an engineer. This should be enough to get production out. The Dwarves get to work immediately, hauling ore and coal in from the materials yard. Auroch is dumping the materials into the furnaces as soon as they get in the door.

Satisfied, you head back up to your office.

The elevator doors open and you see hardwood paneling with large frosted windows all around it. There is a a clear door , slightly ajar, with your name recently painted on it. "URIST", in fine black letters. You open the door, and see the massive oak desk in the center of the room.

You take a seat at the large red leather chair behind the desk, and as you swivel around to face the front, you catch a glimpse of a man standing in a fine suit. An ambush! Curse him!

It appears to be an elven man in a pinstriped suit, wearing a bowler hat.

Address him directly, I suppose.  No need to back down to big suits.  What can he do to us that hasn't already been done, anyways?

You lean back  in your chair and scratch your beard thoughtfully as you eye the elf. An older elf, his skin is starting to wrinkle around his eyes. He's dressed in the latest of fashion, straight off the loom probably. His shoes probably cost ten times what yours did, and the orangutan leather gleams like a mirror. After you spend a good thirty seconds assessing him, he speaks first.

"I understand you have a deal with the Aesylus crafting guild, for steel. Most specifically - Dwarven cannon steel. Is that correct?"

"Look, we make steel here. We have alot of customers, including major Elven crafting guilds. So, it would be safe to assume we do have such an order."

Furthermore, you have forges, correct? Large forges?

"Yes, and I also have a Large Ogre working for me that would love to show you out... through a wall or a window. Your pick. Make a point, I've got things to do."

The elf smirks and takes off his bowler hat, revealing a curly blonde mohawk. He stands up and pulls a large set of papers from wall next to him. He walks over to your desk, and starts unfurling the papers. On the papers is a series of drawings -blueprints - drawn by Dwarven draftsmen and marked up in the old language from the Mountainhomes.

He says, in a somewhat more serious voice : "You are capable of producing the majority of a Sladebreaker cannon here. "

You hold the edges of the blueprints flat as you start to read them. Humph. Twenty five feet long, twelve inch bore. Rifling - you definitely don't have the equipment to do that. It's a tough job, for almost anyone. And you definitely don't have a welder good enough for most of the intricate parts of the job. That you know of.

"Yeah, I can forge the barrels here. But you know Dwarves have never sold one of these to any Elven tribe, clan , or craft guild. And you know the consequences to me if I did! Even if we could forge it, how would you cut the rifling?"

"The craftguild of Tor U'May'd , whom I represent, can find suitable others to finish the order once the barrel is complete"

You set down the blueprints . This is a massive gun, your factory hasn't turned out guns for going on ten years now, and the Dwarven government would frown upon rogue selling of arms to the Elves. In fact, you'd almost be a traitor to your own kind, as surely such a weapon would be used upon the Dwarves at sometime in the future.

Furthermore, you pick up your company financial report from the corner of your desk. Appraising it, you may not even be able to make payroll this week, much less purchase the raw materials for even one cannon. Is it even worth the risk?

You need to set your terms with the elf.

Agreed. Refuse the deal, but keep the plans if we can. We'll need to report this incident as it may indicate the elves are preparing to go to war. Talk to the accountant about taking out a 100k Urist long term loan from the local bank to get the forges and work force up to snuff. Assuming we know which kingdom we are a part of we should be able to use our letter giving us full authority for running the forge as a way to grease the gears and expedite the loan approval if needed.

String the elf along.  Find out how much funding he is willing to offer up front.  Additionally, find out how large their demand is.  Inform the elf that you couldn't even begin production on an item like this at this time.  If he wants you to start working on it, he'll need to place an order for weapons grade steel.  Tell him that in the time you produce the steel, you can start gearing the factory towards weapons production again.  However if he doesn't place an order for steel now you will have to start from scratch on any finished weapons or other goods he wants in the future.

Afterwards, report all of this information to the King and CEO and express your desire to continue to cultivate the elf for information.  Also, compliment the accountant on being the only one in the gods damned factory who knows how to produce anything.
