How does retiring work?
« on: September 11, 2011, 12:09:36 pm »

So, I have an adventurer who's lower left arm recently got chopped off because I decided it would be fun to start clobbering people with a lead ladle instead of slicing them with my longsword... Anyway, his other arm has motor nerve damage, so my master swordsman has been reduced to kicking and biting people to death.
What I want to know is:

What happens when I retire an adventurer? Will I be able to play as him again? Because the game notifies me that all active saves will be deleted.

If I make another character in the same region as the retired character while he is retired, will he be deleted?

Also if I do decide to play as him again, will he still have all of the items that he owned before his retirement?

Thanks in advance for answering these questions. Now I'm just hoping his motor nerve damage will heal, which I've read takes a really long time  :D

1. They retire. You can call them back into service on the screen where you choose a civ (retired people are after Outsiders, so go to the bottom), or you could recruit him if you manage to find him on a new adventurer.
2. No.
3. Yes.

You can also recruit him with another adventurer.

(I think he survived by the grace of being left behind.. but will probalby bleed out shortley after I get close again.. the second guy got kicked by a platypus, and washed into a school of carp from the syndrome and current.

Also, the retired character will get a bunch of new clothing (according to civ) made of the character's kills. Also decorations. If you then play as the character again, you start off with nice clothes then. I think they're fairly high quality (though maybe it depends on the character's skills and/or reputation).

I think that weapon quality degrades if left retired for too long. I have an adventurer who bought a *bronze meat cleaver* in the year 102 in one world, retired him for eight solid game years straight, and when I go back, that *bronze meat cleaver has become a -bronze meat cleaver-.

I've also noticed that I had a LOT more useful (i.e. armor, weapons, tools, food and booze) loot when I un-earthed him in the year 108 than in 102.

So... if UristMcHuman's experience is consistent with retired adventurers left alone while fort mode's running, that implies adventurers are actually doing things without us.

Do their legends pages change, I wonder?

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

They aren't, and no.
