Townsfolk say outlaw is "nearby" to the North East.
I finally figured out how to walk North East.
How far do I have to go? Seems like I've been going forever. There was a river I couldn't figure out how to cross so I fast traveled to the other side of it. Then I thought I went too far so I came back. Then I figured out how to get in the river and drowned.

How far is "nearby"?

Also, with whom doth I trade? Traders don't trade. They tell me to find a shopkeep.

To find the bandits, press q then z to go to your quest log and see where it is.  For trading, you need to go to a shop, which are pretty rare anywhere that's not a large city.

Do I automatically get a quest for talking to the person about 'services' or do I have to accept it or something?

Also, just checking but you do know to press 'T' to fast travel, right?

You automatically get it. You don't HAVE to do it, though, you could just ask them for another quest.

Hell, you don't even have to report back to the same NPC when you're done with the quest.

"nearby" is usually within about 5 blocks of the town from what I've seen any further is a short walk, I've had a bandit camp 1 block away from the town i started in before.
