Stealth games

Recently, I've been craving a pc MGS-style game, but there is a severe lack of them I know of. Recommendations?

I seem to recall that Metal Gear Solid 1 (and possibly 2) were released on PC. There are also the Merry Gear Solid fangames, which although short, may scratch your itch.

Deux Ex Human Revoluation lets you play through the game stealthily, so I suggest you play that game.

The Thief series. Not MGS-style as such, but certainly stealth.

Alpha Protocol is a game where you can play stealthily.  I enjoyed it.

Any Hitman game is cool, because you can hide in plain sight and vanish without a trace  :P

Try playing jagged alliance 2 as a stealthy character. Gameplay isn't like mgs, but it's quite challenging and you can do a lot without being seen in that game.

Sounds like you need to play Covert Action. An old old game from before MGS that from what I've watched (And what little I have played) is pretty dang fun.

Edit: ...What? It's not even stealth-based it's more top-down shooter in spots... why did I recommend this? Must of been flipping tired last night...

The Thief series. Not MGS-style as such, but certainly stealth.

Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2: The Metal Age are the pinnacle of stealth games, and everything since has frankly paled in comparison.  They are not a blend with other genres, as is Deus Ex or Splinter Cell (and I very much liked Deus Ex); on expert difficulty you are not allowed to kill anyone.

I cannot recommend them highly enough.  If you don't believe me, try any major reviewer, or Zero Punctuation.  Both games made the very, very short list that Yahtzee strongly recommends.  The graphics have not aged well in 15 years, but the gameplay is untouched, and there is a substantial fan mission community with some excellent additions.

Very much what KG said. And if the graphics are somehow a dealbreaker for you, there is the not-as-good-but-still-decent Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Speaking of Zero Punctuation/Yahtzee, he also made Trilby, the art of theft which, while short, is actually not bad at all.

Thief 2 on highest difficulty if you want a true sneak-only experience. You can also go with NOT knocking out anyone (there are two missions that forbid that anyway on max diff, but nothing stops you from doing so every time)

Thief 3 while very easy (i can not expres enough how easy it is) can - with all the self-imposed challenges - also be a very enjoyable ride.

Splinter Cell games are mostly sneaky, but you have combat sequences, and they too are relatively easy.

Deus Ex HR - if played this way - is a great sneak game. Go for pacifist on highest diff, and you have quite a ride.

MGS has only sneaking elements. 95% of the time you're fighting weird bosses / giant robots / other.

Alternatively there are the birdPoV tactical games in which you can chose to go sneaky-sneaky. Jagged Alliance, Silent Storm and others.

Lastly, there was a series from birdPoV that was focused on sneaking. Commando(s). The difficulty can be ball-breaking if you don't plan everything perfectly. Full recommendation with Stworca's seal of approval!  :o
