Are there any decent video tutorials on starting adventurer mode?
« on: September 09, 2011, 04:04:26 pm »

I see the wiki and I'll be reading through that when I get off of work tonight, but in the meantime, can anyone recommend some well-put-together, mildly entertaining video tutorials for DF Adventure mode?

Why a tutorial? Why a video? Both starting and playing Adventure Mode is too easy to require a tutorial, and the best Adventure Mode stories are right here on the forum. Are you really just looking for someone making snarky comments tangentially related to what's on your screen? Would it make you feel better if you had someone there to tell you how you are about to play your game?

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

300 human/elf/dwarf/goblin/kobold bodies 20 random animal/fish/bird bodies and 3 dragon bodies all in one backpack. fun stuff.

Yes. Sure. Why not?
I enjoy tutorials that allow me to see the game unfold, get helpful tips, so that my first play through isn't me ALT+TABBING between the game and a wiki every 4 seconds.
But thank you for helping me clarify my needs :)

When I started playing adventure mode, I just got the list of shortcut keys, pasted them in notepad so that I could look at them once in a while, and dove right into it without any tutorials or anything like that. I think that would be the best approach to this, and as Nivm said, adventure mode is significantly easier than fortress mode so it doesn't really require a tutorial.

I'm not sure if there are any purely tutorial-oriented videos for adventure mode, but there are quite a few Let's Plays of it on YouTube, and some Let's Players do talk about why and how they do the stuff they do. It's probably not perfect, but it's something at least.

Well, the one thing I would recommend you doing, if you want to go through the first 1 or 2 enemy encounters without being severely crippled or dying, is training a bit before venturing out.

you should train

-knapping to raise kinestetic and spatial senses, they apparently are important in combat.
-throwing because throwing stuff at enemies is crazy effective, and I think it also raises agility a bit.
-ambusher because the enemy can't hit you if he can't see you, I've already killed 10+ bandits without being detected even once.
-wrestling because it can be very useful for crowd control, also it greatly increases strength.
-shield user, armor user and dodging for obvious reasons.

These are the ones you can easily train at the beginning of a game, for knapping and throwing just constantly pick up small stones and knapp them into sharp rocks, then throw the sharp rock away, for ambusher all you have to do is walk back and forth while sneaking.

For wrestling you need to find a small and harmless animal, then you keep grabbing and releasing it ,and you can also also let it attack you to raise shield, armor and dodging, honey badgers are the best for the latter, I once found a whole bunch of them, grabbed 3 or 4 and just kept passing the time, I was legendary shield/armor user and dodger in no time, also it's best you only try this after you've acquired some armor.

Of course you don't have to be all legendary before getting your first quest, but getting at least a few levels on some of those skills greatly increases your chances of survival, but keep in mind that no matter how much you train  or how good your gear is, chances are you will eventually die.
