My first big project: pyramid tomb

My dwarves finally finished my first big project: a pyramid used to entomb the dead. I suppose it would have been awesome-dwarfy to make it a big pyramid just for one tomb, but since all the walls are constructed, and so can't be engraved to improve their value, I used this for cheaper tombs and common burial areas. The interior is made out of microcline, encased in orthoclase ramps, with a cap made of silver. I set this off on the other side of the river from my fortress entrance to make it extra-pyramidy.


Here's a screenshot of the base level of the pyramid. Off to the right you can see the bridge and the fort's walled-off fishing/water source/water wheel structure.


This is the second level of the pyramid. As you can see, I have planned tombs and coffins for common burial. As you ascend common burial becomes the norm, with a small plot for pets at the top. The tombs aren't finished, as they still need cabinets and coffers, but I'm trying to select the best the fort has to offer so it may take some time. No worries though, I haven't started to drown nobles yet.

How'd you get stonesense working?  .25 never seems to mesh well for me...

Actually, the original pyramids were made out of limestone, with a covering of fine limestone, that was then chipped and smoothed by engravers, giving it a perfectly smooth, flat surface, like a single block extending up a few hundred feet.  What you see today, that white top on the pyramid is all that remains of the fine limestone, the rest looted or degraded.  To be accurate in DF terms, I think that would mean constructing the pyramid, but then the ramps would be made of blocks instead of loose stone.  Of course, any use of precious metals is advised.

Also, this isn't a big project.  This is just, a little hut really.  Now, start casting obsidian, placing tomb-specific statues, invert it, and have it spew magma, and we'll talk...

Yeah, I don't have any of that. Also, I didn't know before it was finished that you could use blocks to make structures, but I probably would have done that if I'd known about it. Not that it would have made any difference, but it woulda been neat and probably spead up the construction. I wasn't really trying to go for a pyramid as Egyptian as possible, just a pyramid. The silver cap was mainly an afterthought.

I totally agree! But I used this as a learning experience, since I haven't done anything that big before. Also, I posted this because I have been looking for huge awesomeness by the rest of y'all and can't seem to find it. I was hoping that posting this would be inspiration for others. You can tell me all about how awesome a lava spewing llama sculpture is, but until I see something in the game that shows how it was done, you might as well be telling me how fun it is to do taxes.

Clicking, huh...  Well, sounds weird, but if you said it works...

Blocks actually slow down construction quite a bit, as you have to work them in a mason's shop and then build them.  In fact, that's pretty much all blocks are good for, aside from screw pumps and (I think) ashery.  But, they're 5x more expensive than raw stone, so you can make a room much more valuable if you build it out of blocks instead of loose stone.  Of course, smoothing and engraving is preferred over blocks, and blocks have the same value as bars, so gold blocks aren't much different from gold bars.

You can get stonesense to work on .25 by running dfhack, then going into the dfhack folder and copying the memory.xml file from it to the stonesense folder.

At the risk of sounding like Topper McOneup, my current and perpetual project is building a pyramid housing complex, from glass/obsidian/stoneware bricks. Shockingly enough, it takes quite a bit of time to build up enough bricks for a 15 layer pyramid, generally longer than it takes for boredom to set in. By my calculations, it would take roughly 5000 bricks to construct such a pyramid, plus or minus a bit.

You know what takes longer to build than a pyramid? A dome. I've been trying to build a 100-tile diameter for four embarks now, and every time something else brings me to my doom. First I got bored, second time I accidentally freed the clowns, third time my file got deleted, and this most recent time I was taken out by a siege. This one really sucked, because I had a flatland with a volcano in the corner, with a gold road and the entire first level of my dome built, entirely in quartzite. They couldn't get in until a frigging cave crawler took out my only defense. I had 3 tamed harpies which also got killed by an FB named Cethutha.

For many newbies, any above ground multi-z level sturcture is something to be proud of. Heck, I've never built a multi z leve structure more complicated than a a 5 z level box.

Wow, uh... I have never, ever had a problem in .25 with Stonesense Slate. Maybe you guys' memory.xml or whatever needs to be made current?

I'm working on an, admittedly, boring lava lamp shaped tower.. if I get it done, I'll make the next one shoot lava.. or, build another one by the lower vent, with some sort of timer to pump magma from one to the other...
