The Tribe Game (Year 2)
« on: September 09, 2011, 11:59:13 am »

I figure I'll start a forum roleplaying thingie. So here's my commitment. I'll be generating maps down to the village level using HexMapper. I'll also post turn summaries at least once a week. If a situation warrants quicker posts, then I'll do that.

I have a few ideas of a base system, but I'll be fleshing out the game mechanics as things go. We'll see how that works for me.

Anyway, feel free to join at any time. Give a quick blurb about your character. Check out the example if you don't know what to do.
Spoiler: Sample Character (click to show/hide)
You are a member of a tribe filling a role in the tribe. The tribe doesn't have to be the same tribe as everyone else, and the role can be anything from chieftain to, well any other role that a tribe would need. The technology will be Pre-colombian America. No steel or guns, but go ahead and be inventive in wood, bone, or stone. If you think I will think it's iffy, show research documenting pre-colombia America existence.
If you are also establishing a tribe for you to be in, please describe the tribe. Here's an example below.

Interesting. I'll reserve a spot here and fill it out later once we get more people joining. I'm also assuming there will be some sort of mechanics to the game? I don't really plan to min/max, but it is always good to know what things will help more than others.

Yea, there will be some mechanics. I imagine I'll use D&D's 6 primary stats with a conflict resolution system similar to Warhammer so it's easier to deal with mass combat. I'm pretty sure I'll be using D20s because it gives me more percentages to work with while still keeping it somewhat manageable (5% for each number rather than 16.6% per each number.)
I'll provide the system I got to direct requests for it when I got it established. I won't provide it in general because I want to be able to keep adjusting it as time goes. I'll edit the first post with some comment about it when I've got it established. Right now it's all theoretical and subject to lots of change. Besides, we've got to have a slew of traits and stuff to modify base attributes or it won't be any fun, and I'll only add them and weapons as they come up.

Speaking of weapons and the system... maybe I'll organize Maptool based battles, since I'll have the data to generate that when the bugs are worked out. But I'll hold off on that until there is battles with multiple people involved and I'm confident in the mechanics. Abstracting the battles gives a better flow, especially since everyone can be there for sure then :)

I added an example map, just because. It gives an idea of the quality of maps that will be provided. I should probably get a membership somewhere so I can update and revise maps. We'll see how things go. The tool I found allows me to go down to some serious detail regionally, and out to a far distance globally, so it should be fun. (HexMapper) That means I already got the continents roughed out. Well, outlined. It'll be awhile before they become anything except an outline. Some exploration and development and stuff. But, if you wanna build the Inca Empire, the tools to make the maps exist, so yea.

Sounds good. I've got some ideas for tribes and the like.

You mentioned technology, however, are we to use only a historical basis for our tribes? I'm assuming fictional is good from your examples but the full on boundries have me curious.

Human only? Meaning nothing like magic or magical races(dragonkin, elves, dwarves and the like), or abnormal races(merfolk, annoying furries, insect people, aliens)?

Don't want to work out a big expansive tribe, and yet later find out I'm way beyond the standards.

also in.
1-2 people cannot be called tribes, as they are barely groups. i start calling "tribes" groups of 15+ peoples, but you're the GM.

I support the non-humans tribes idea. Maybe all tribes should be the same thing, but non-human.

For races, I am allowing fictional creations in the homo genus. So yea, you can have something that looks and acts like elves and dwarves. Merfolk, furries, and insect people are out though.

Technology, it's Pre-Colombian Americas. Think of the Americas in 1491. Stone and bone tools for the most part. Some limited Metallurgy, but very limited use as weapons (Individuals could have a copper axe, for example, but entire tribes wouldn't, unless you could provide an example of it being used large scale historically in that timeframe)
A lot of technologies are completly out because they didn't exist. Guns, for example, came over the ocean. I don't think America had any Gunpowder in that time, but if you can provide proof they did, I'll allow gunpowder.

For tribal size, don't put yourself in control off the bat from something that is a federation or empire. Also don't put yourself in charge of a city with more than 5000 souls. You can make what you are in charge of PART of a large tribe, but try to avoid making anything with more territory than 8000 square miles or more than 1 Tenochtitlan. There is room for multiple Inca/Rome/Mongol/Chinas, but there is an absolute limit on how much space there is in the world. So yea...

:)

And yes, the examples are rediculous. I thought the names or the fact they got the space of a house gave that away, but I guess they didn't. If anyone creates a tribe that small, they will NOT be listed on the tribes group. Unless they control territory like mad. If 10 people control 20000 square miles, I'm not gonna say they aren't a tribe. I'd be too afraid of them.

Me too.

I understand that tribes shouldnt get too big.
Personnaly, I call tribe anything between 15 and some-hundreds peoples, with primitive tools. So ok for 1000-or-so limit.

I'm in. is it ok if my "tribe" are more of a group of wanderers who exchange goods with other tribes/nations/whatever to survive?

Anyway...

Tribe: El-effichen.

The nomadic tribe of the El-effichen wanders the world travelling from place to place trading with the peoples of the world. Once, generations ago, the tribe of El-effhichen was part of a clan, a clan of several tribes who swore fealty to a great chief, but those days are over. They cross harsh deserts, glaring tundras, deep waters, and the occasional tunnel to trade and survive. They are made up of around 32 people with a herd of goats, cattle, and sheep following them. They have also successfully tamed a species of crows to act as animals of hunt, scouting, and recreation.

The El-effichen maintain ties to their old clanmates, but only two of them are considered allies. The El-kekein and the Meqq-Al. This alliance is for the most part symbolic since they rarely meet.

Patriarch (Chieftain): Alim idg Eyyek
Allies:
El-kekein
Meqq-Al
Enemies:
None
Population: 32
Traits:
Nomadic
Herders
Traders
Hardy

Character

Tribe: El-effichen
Role: Trader/Herder.
Skills/Traits
Mercantile
Animal-bonded
Friend with Patriarch's family
Equipment:
Clothing
Whip (not sure if this would be allowed)
Crook
rope (not sure if this would be allowed)
Aiqun, a crow.

(hmm...El-effichen seems popular for some reason...That or people are too lazy to make their own tribes and mine still sucks :P )

nvm. I guess you were just using mine as a template.

I don't really mind being in the same tribe...It was just the individual thing...

Anyway, time for my action.

Micelus will bring the children with him and teach them how to raise sheep and goats (what they eat, their uses, how to "harvest" them, etc.). Also count how many are adolescent. Count how many males and females we have.

While teaching them, also care for the livestock.

When all the above actions are finished, talk to the Patriarch to determine where we go next and what our plans are.
