Seconding Oblique projection. Genre: digging downwards game, which I guess is what you mean by "RPG with destructible terrain" but you really should make it clearer.

but what is to stop someone digging themselves into a spot they cannot see?

Four-dimensional isometric dungeon crawler.

Glad to see this going again! Hope it works out better this time. :D

Er, sammus blows mega-kisses at people?
Seduce mother brain, win game?

I was thinking more like... Richter Belmont seducing sparkly vampires and sexy werewolves? There's a demographic here, I am sure.

Okay actually I was really just posting to watch this thread. I like the direction it's taking. :{)

BTW, good luck on the job Siquo. Hope it's not too awful.
Thanks! No, I hope so too. It's making websites again, but on a different level now. Playin' da global markets yo.

Poll is up. I'm off to set up some basics and get some practice. People with strong opinions on view and looks: keep in mind that you're supposed to deliver the graphics. If you can't, why'd you talk in the first place? ;) Currently I'm leaning towards isometric myself, and "borrow" Stonesense's tileset. That covers all the basics we need (terrain tiles etc) (since we're probably going for the fantasy/mideval genre anyway).

Moustache is IN. I should be compiling a "canon" of stuff that's really going to be in the game even if it breaks all suspension of disbelief.

I would also offer my services as a scribe. Possibly an additional coder, depending on what language you're using.

Monologue or dialogue might be included, might not. It's up to you.

It'd be neat to see someone make an RPG in the stlye of Baldur's Gate II.

I have a little plot outline for a pet-idea I have.

You know how in most videogames, you get a number of lives?

What if, Each life was you being a different character.

Mixed with exploring an underground realm, for profit, amoung other things.

To start, only a peasant is interested in this "expedition"

This expedition is founded by a wealthy merchant, and the goal is to find, something!
(Lol I dunno if it will have a win condition)

To gain extra "lives" you must find things that attract new people.

A gold vein, a sacrificial altar, ancient ruins, the lair of a demon!

It is very dangerous to explore these caves, and you may very well get lost between two caverns. You carry food, yes, but it slows you down and you may very well have to eat lichen off the floor.

And hope you do not die.

Beasts lurk in the underground, and you are advised not to let them catch your scent.

Say you find a gold-vein.

If you manage to return to the surface, and can then return with your map
(you did bring a mapping kit right?)
Future explorers can learn where you have gone and follow your steps.

When items are brought back, they can be used in future expeditions, sold, or whatnot.

Are ye interested in a cave crawler(with a bit of dungeony features, perhaps)?

I like eerrs idea, but with more digging than spelunking.

Further suggestions: make it something as rara as an *realistic* underground environment. Mining take ages and you have o dispose an equal volume of rock (and it would be automated/fastforwarded somehow). Caves are claustrophobic and you often have to crawl in spaces so small you can't turn around, and getting stuck is lethal. You use ropes and lifts much more than your feet. Things tend to flood, and you often wade or even go by boat, and pumps are a necessity that you always have to fear will fail. Mining anything other than the narrowest tunnel requires extreme care or you're pretty much asking for a cave in. And never forget you loyal canary, or you won't even get a warning that you need to run to not be instantly killed by smothering gases.

You could make it freakkin scary without needing a single monster or antagonist except nature.

I'm confused as how to make "digging" a game mechanic. Can anyone share his vision on how that would work?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Devlog: Got my IDE and Hello World working, and how to use display with a double buffer. Now to read some more tutorials.

I was going to put in the dating sim aspect as an afterthought/joke/easter egg, but I just got a way better idea. One that is totally incompatible with a dating sim, though.
