Castleobscure: the Dwarven Dark Tower (31.25)
« on: September 09, 2011, 03:59:57 am »

Castle Obscure is my half finished mega-project, a 40Xx40Yx150Z obsidian block waiting to be carved into a totally wicked tower.  I figured some people might want to make their own tower without going through the soul-crushing tedium of casting all that obsidian, so I'm posting the save here.  I wiped all the original inhabitants--except a few kids--and tried to clear as much crap off the map as possible, so it will seem sort of like a fresh embark if you don't want to reclaim it.  Not much history has happened so far, artifacts and invasions were off, but expect to see lots of engravings of dwarves falling.  There's also an older save for people who'd like to see the rig in action.

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4927

MAP FEATURES:
Flat 3x3 map with 100 Z levels
Haunted Badlands: The Spiteful Urn-Dunes
Scarce trees: Saguaro
Two biomes with different freezing times
Skeletal Camels, many
River: Sweetswam the Cover of Haze
20 Z-levels between the surface and first cavern
Small underground lake
Fire clay and sand
Magnetite and Lignite
Marble layers
Lots of Sphalerite and Tetrahedrite
Deep chasm (that added way more Z levels than I wanted)

RIMTARAZMOL NOTES:
I added the Display Case Mod and the Bonfire Mod, but it's otherwise vanilla.  Vanilla with sprinkles.  I also added one noble position in the raws, "lord/lady", which is pretty much the same as a baron. It's assignable by the mayor, so you can just ignore it if you don't want extra nobles.  I was planning on making a militant aristocracy for my fort...

A 50 Z-level deep moat surrounds the block, which pierces all three of the cavern layers.  Flying FBs could come right up to the surface.  If you don't like it, you'll have to pave over it or something.  I also cleared away some stone so the tower would have a more commanding view of the caverns.  There's also a left over pumpstack in the NW corner that i was too lazy to fill in.

A few bugs mar the landscape, and also totally piss me off, like two null-spaces in the river and some year-round ice bridges.  Ice is buggy as hell, and I don't plan to ever embark on a freezing biome again.  There are also ghost items in the stocks screen from stuff that got melted or encased, but that's no big deal.

The save is like a migrant-challenge.  There is a hut that contains an anvil on the roof, along with wood and lignite in the walls, so you can make a training axe/pick if you don't get those with the next migrant wave.  Also one peahen and three children.  (Those were my safety-survivors in case of tantrums.)  I didn't want to throw away all the mineral wealth from strip mining, so it's sitting way way down at the bottom of the moat.  Have fun trying to get it.

Oh, yeah...
!!I LEFT YOU A PRESENT ON THE ROOF!!
...a little science project I did to keep myself entertained while pouring magma.

It's just a monolith...  wow...  40x40 too, I wonder what could be done with that...

What's that odd point underground?  Looks like an enormous mined out section?  Under the caverns?

Alright, it's time to [SPEED:0] for a bit and see what I can carve into that monstrosity...  And see if there's enough resources about to really embellish the surfaces.  Some gold or steel accents would add a nice touch.

Is Stonesense working with .25?  It always seemed to have trouble...

It's ALREADY smoothed on the outside...  the inside is solid obsidian for over a hundred levels.  It's also dragging me down to 16 FPS...

lol i see what you did thar mr Grackle

you used burning camel skeletons to steady the fps for everyone! :P

yeah i got 16 fps too.

its fucking huge and great but its gonna take some work to establish a workable colony again so that it can actually be carved

edit - lol just noticed the raws, gonna be easier than i thought :P though slow - nice work mate

I feel as if I have been trolled by this.  I also feel that I don't care, and that I actually enjoyed it.  I feel that I may have been trolled harder than I realize...

Ha Ha. Who doesn't love ever-burning skeletons? But yeah, you might wanna turn temperature off if it lights your computer on fire.

Also before a reclaim, you should wait awhile first to see if any ghosts pop up.  I tried to get rid of all the ghosts, but there might be some from the last death-wave.  I think there's a still a bug that you can't engrave slabs for previous residents...

Edit:  That big blob is the Deep Chasm. That's an accidental feature.  There is, however, one spot where you could pit a creature all the way from the roof to the bottom of that hole.

This is just another of the many reasons why I love this game.  :)

Too bad that map isn't flooded with Macaques...

Let's see what I can make of that... and how much fps I'll get.

Either way, this is awesome.
