i have no problems with Microcline. Right now im even mining all the Microcline i can get my hands on. It allows me to "cheat" a bit with my Addy-Space-Elevator/Colony project. its hard enought to get a 7x7 Elevator with magma/water pumpstack + stairs Walled with Candy, so i use Microcline for the Floors/inner walls.

Along with the also common and horribly clashing orthoclase, as well as less common brightly colored stones like cinnabar, petrified wood, and olivine, I also like it in mechanisms.  It's nice to have the microcline lever, orthoclase lever, and so on hooked up to properly color-coded constructions.  As such my outer bridges tend to be technicolor.  Even if the bridges aren't, distinct levers is still a plus, since I tend to build lever banks.  nice to not have to check my notes that the upper-left turns off/on the mist generator while the one next to it activates the horrific death traps: instead, the BLUE one activates mist, and the RED one kills things.  Saves me a step when frantically trying to do something.

i disagree with your like for microcline but i find what you do with colors definitely agreeable.

maybe i'll use microcline in the future (instead of dumping it) to color code activities linked to things i hate, such as nobles - for their tailored accidents ofcourse.

Funny, my mist generator is usually directly linked to my death traps - literally.  One of my favorite trap designs is to have a large reservoir of water that's being constantly filled.  When it starts to overflow, the excess water is dumped through the dining hall to form mist.  Meanwhile, if an enemy triggers the pressure plate outside, then it locks the doors and floods that section using the same reservoir.  When the trap reservoir refills, then the mist resumes...  Usually just in time to soothe a few measly survivors from a tantrum because some hauler was outside during the attack -.-

I've recently taken a shine to architecture.  I'm particularly fond of cornering my buildings.  Build a regular 5x5 tower, but the corner wall tiles will be a different material than the rest.  In particular, I like using native stone construction, like limestone, conglomerate, whatever layer stone is plentiful, and having the corners be iron, at least partially upwards.  I like the feeling of "rock solid construction" studded with metal supports.  The more elaborate/fancy ones get bronze walls and steel corners.

Point is, there's a lot you can do with colors and materials to make things look nicer.  Recently I was building a hollow tower, and made the base of microcline, and the main tower of granite.  The microcline was used to curve around towards the back, making a smooth round of color change that used the less-plentiful microcline some, and the infinite granite more.  Sadly I lost that save, but I may do a [SPEED:0] to recreate it and show the idea.

I don't exactly hate microcline, although the continual "You've struck microcline!"/pause/zoom from 40d was annoying, in a slightly amusing way.  (I kind of imagined the miner stoping to shout "Hey guys!  Guess what!  I've struck microcline!  Stop what you're doing and come and have a look!" and everyone else saying "For gods' sake, Urist, shut. up.").

The low value and horrible colour also makes it rather worthless (increasing the amusement/irritation of all the "Hey!  Stop and look!  Microcline!" announcements), but one the other hand, I like having funny coloured rocks for colour-coding bridges and levers, and for some jobs a bit of microcline actually looks quite nice.

And now we don't have to worry about the game pausing and zooming whenever you find some, it is far less irritating.  (Although in a way, it seems a bit sad that a bit of Dwarf Fortress gaming culture has passed into history, along with fortress-destroying elephants and carp).

Some things will never escape DF history.  Carp, rampant engravings, microcline, and catsplosions will never be fully outlived.

I also always felt cheated by how Cobaltite shows up like a metal (in veins and all) but actually isn't
I've modded cobaltite to drop a bar of nickel and have an extra 10% chance to drop a bar of iron.

Look the mineral up in Wikipedia.

Cobaltite is an ore, but it's not an ore that a dwarf should be able to smelt, given the timeline of technology.  Aluminum is possible to process out of certain stones as well, but not with DF level tech.  That's why a lot of almost-ore is currently barren, because it's outside the tech level.
