Microcline
« on: September 08, 2011, 08:59:04 pm »

Time to clear this up. What is it about Microcline? It seems to rival ELVES when it comes to hatred.

So... why do we want to genocide microcline so much?

Its bright blue on a black background and it can sometimes replace metal ore deposits. Reason enough to hate it.

The "micro" on the name insults dwarves, who are noted for their shorter stature.

Because it's common, worthless, and announced with gusto.  "You have struck microcline!" sounds like good news, as you see that little yellow streamer along the bottom, only to realize, "Fuck, microcline again.  Just what I need, bright blue cabinets..."

And, ultimately, there is no reason.  Behind anything.  Why do we have elves?  Why do we love kobolds?  Why do we bathe in magma?  There is no rationality.  There are only dwarves.

I hate cobaltite a lot more tho, and seem to strike that just about every embark. Plus I'm pretty sure it makes the embark screen lie about shallow metals.

It was worse in 40d, where every 'you have struck' message paused the game and moved your focus to the miner.  Worthless stone got REALLY annoying.

How do I mod dwarves to detest microcline?  Like, the same way that elves become upset when you trade wood, I want dwarves upset when you trade microcline.  "All the riches of the earth and you offer me this?  Good day sir!  I said good day!"

I think only [VERMIN_HATEABLE] can be absolutely detested.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.

there were microline souvineers at the Redding meetup; it can actually be a very beautiful stone, but i wouldnt want to build a legendary dining room exclusively out of it.

you might still be able to get them as donation gifts.

Microcline is a beautiful stone.  It's not so much in DF.  Wiki it, it's got some nice colors and formations in the real world.

In the same way pyrite--fool's gold--sometimes but rarely contains any amount of gold worth investigating but provokes further and frustrating hope from the color and association, so does microcline with adamantine.

Thus the annoyance from players, and--supposedly--the frustration from ignorant humans that think they're buying something worthwhile.

Almost.  Adamantine weighs as much as styrofoam, so I don't think anyone would be making that mistake if they picked it up.
